Skyline drive is well worth the venture. Good free fun and nice views of the Canon City to be had. I don't think it compares to Trail Ridge road in Rocky Mountain National park, but if you are in this part of the state, make sure to check it out!
I hike up here when I come to town and it's simply amazing! Beautiful view, not to crowded, and nice to get away from everyday stress and just relax.
WOW the views of the town was amazing I normally do not do heights but our trip on Skyline Drive was wonderful.
One way drive along the ridge back on the edge of town. View dinasour the tracks. Drive is bike and pedestrian friendly.
Not a ride for someone who has a fear of heights, took my nephew and family one it. Didn't known wife, had a pr.oblem with heights, not good.
Guide did not attend to safety. I got hurt. The guide was on his last day of work and leaving to go back to school, and did not care about our safety.
This was an awesome 4 mile drive where you can actually see the footprints of Dinosaurs...but you had to keep your eyes on the road as well :-) the potential for rolling off a 400 foot cliff was always there ...thank God it was a one way road !!!
Skyline drive goes along the ridge of the mountains to the West of Canon City. First, it is like being on a roller coaster, it goes up and down. Second, don't go up if it is windy or icy. While they usually lock the gates under these conditions, the road is narrow, there are steep dropoffs and there are few guardrails. They recommend nothing longer that a 20 foot vehicle and it is one way. However, I recommend it for the views from the top. You have great views of the Wet Mountains and the Sangres behind them. You also will get to see the town from above. Not bad for a quick, free drive.
Always a thrill to do Skyline Drive! Check out the Fossils in the wall. And it's Free! Great way to get an overall view of the valley. It's kinda scary but paved and safe.Visited November 2014
Just ignore the review about the guide and getting hurt. This is a one lane road that you drive yourself. If you get hurt it's because you didn't tend to your own safety or walked off the road and stumbled over a rock. DO NOT drive this road if you are in a hurry. There are a couple of pulll over points so you can park and walk a little but that's it. No parking "lots" and no trails until to get to the bottom. I've lived here for 25 years and have taken all my visitors on Skyline Drive. Many want to do it every time them come visit. Great value for your money - because it's free.
