..Only puzzled by the symbolic Elephant…in the evenings it resembles a bit Marrakesh, the crowds come for a stroll, while music is played, circus entertainers create a warm an amusing evening..
Nice open piazza with the Catania emblem -- the elephant fountain. Duomo worth the visit inside as well.
The elephant statue is the centerpiece of the piazza - but the Duomo is the highlight. I hadn't realized when we were there that the elephant was made from lava.
The Piazza Duomo is grand with limited vehicular traffic and is surrounded by wonderful picturesque structures. Catanians gather here in the evening to mingle and stroll.
Perhaps architecturally not one of the greatest cathedrals, but nonetheless, not without interest, and where Vincenzo Bellini, son of Catania, is buried. Baroque buildings roundabout are all quite impressive as is the neighbouring piazza housing the university.
Not a very big square but surely one very rich of important monuments. The Elephant in the center is the symbol of the city.
Lovely setting, the church is beautiful and the grounds around add to the beauty. The Fontana is right there, the market around the corner, and the bistros have outdoor seating to let you have a coffee and a pastry as you look at the world buzzing around you.
Ideal for a cup of coffee (or better for a capuccino and a cornetto) whilst watching people passing by. A visit to the Duomo is a must.
We called into Catania on a cruise, we went on the hop on hop off bus for a tour around Catania and surrounding areas and when we arrived back to the port we decided to see a little bit more of the city. And we were impressed. The Piazzo Duomo is very impressive and well worth exploring and photographing. There are so many beautiful buildings to see.
