For a city the size of Kearney, I was surprise by the size of the collection, and the quality and variety of the artworks they have collected. If you are a fan of architecture, you may want to stop there just for the building. It's well curated and well maintained. It took us about 2 hours to enjoy this place.
This is a treasure hidden in Kearney. Yes, they advertise, but to truly appreciate the high quality, Nebraska art, the MONA is worth a visit!!
A reviewer complained about the "rude staff" at MONA. What she failed to provide was her own rude behavior. She pushed her way past a tour group and demanded a ticket. When it was explained on 3 occasions that the museum was free, she left abruptly and complained loudly about being treated rudely. She was not even in the museum for 30 seconds. The staff person asked if he had been rude and 5 different memebers of the tour group said no but that the woman in question had been exceedingly mean spirited and demanding. Consider both sides and the source. I witnessed her behavior and she was far ruder than the museum staff.
While staying overnight in Kearney during our trek across Nebraska on I-80, we read about a special exhibit at their Art Museum so made a stop. It doesn't open until 11AM but since we were also touring another museum, it worked out. Otherwise, I wouldn't have hung around just for this museum. It's not a very large building so can't house a big collection but they've done a nice job w/different exhibits, a nice gift shop and a few interesting outdoor sculptures. Definitely worth the time if you're in town. The Kearney community is lucky to have such a resource.
This is a wonderful museum converted from the Old Post Office. Wonderful layout, exhibits of Nebraska Artists and an extraordinary gift store. Oh and it is Free.....donations accepted......Right now a fabulous quilt exhibit.....
So nice to see a museum that features Nebraska artists. The gift shop is first class. It has many nice handmade items from artists to buy. The location is nice and convenient to other awesome downtown shopping.
Recently we stopped to see the current Quilting Exhibit. My wife and her sister in law were very enthused with the quality of this showing. Every time we decide to stop and spend a little time at MONA it is such a pleasant and relaxing time. This is truly a gem of an attraction which is free to the public and offers rotating displays of this great Nebraska collection.
What a marvelous surprise it was to drive up to this beautiful stately building, enter it's cool marble and granite halls, there's no entry fee, and walk through its amazing collection of art. And the gift shop is sweet, too. On my visit the collection included works by luminaries such as Bierstadt, Audubon, Alfred Jacob Miller and Thomas Hart Benton as well as many contemporary artists with Nebraska ties. They had a beautifully displayed quilt exhibit going on at the time, too. Well worth the exit from I-80. Check your map for the location, it was easy to find but not situation on the main drag like some attractions. This is a beautiful and well-loved institution that deserves a visit!
This is not a large art museum, but has a good variety of displays, a friendly staff, and is very well maintained
This was a casual stop, but I think the museum does a good job of representing art from Nebraskans. Nice jewelry in giftshop.
