Bolivian Simon Patino was the "king of tin" and from about 1890 to 1940 was one of the 5 wealthiest men on the plante. He lived in Europe but built this "palace" as a retirement home--he never saw it but died on his way to Bolivia. The mansion is an over the top version of the various baroque and classical style palaces that Patino had seen in Europe. A little of Versaille, of the Vatican, Florence etc all done with foreign craftsmen and material. It is truly amazing and slightly in bad taste. It gives an important glimpse in the lives of tycoons of the era and is an important chapter in Bolivia's history.
Staff is too formal; long winded explanations lacking in appeal and charisma. Difficult to visit with small children. Staff needs to be more friendly, relaxed and personable. Otherwise, beautiful Palacio and grounds. Definitely worth the visit.
Me gusto mucho la visita guiada, y en general esta todo muy bien mantenido, tanto la arquitectura ocmo el parque y presentado para el turista. Recomendable para hacer en Cochabamba
This place is not only beautiful as a museum but also great as a cultural centre - they organise exhibitions and concerts (for free!), and have a superb information about cultural events in Cochabamba (I would say, its better to go there than to Tourist Information. Guides speak very good English as well.I just wish, It was possibile to take pictures inside the palace (without flash, of course:)
Visita guiada muito bom, com vários pontos interessantes da história do Simon I. Patiño. Arquitetura bem conservada, assim como o bosque que tem ao redor. Rende fotos lindíssimas! Infelizmente, não pode tirar fotos dentro do casarão.
The palace gardens are very nice for a walk on sunny days. In March 2014 there was an exhibition of paintings in the basement of the palace.
I lived in Cochabamba for a few years, and I would always take visitors to the Palacio Portales. It's such a gem right in the city and is so well taken care of, which can be rare in Bolivia. Do take the tour, offered in English and Spanish and keep an eye out for concerts and events at the Palacio while you're in Cochabamba. They have the events posted outside and there is usually a free concert about once a week at the park. You have to pay a little for the tour and to go inside the house, but it's worth it. If you don't want to pay, you can tour the grounds for free.
This house is well worth the visit for the mix of furniture and paintings especially in the ball room area and games room. The cost is 15 Bolivianos.
hemos visitado con mi esposa el palacio portales nos encanto sus jardines su belleza lo bien cuidado recomiendo su visita
Unable to visit house because of disability but garden was lovely. Bouganvillea climbing huge palms and many other great plantings. Quiet paths surrounded by mountains
