The road from Thredbo to Charlotte Pass is gorgeous to ride a motorbike on (in late October / November). Very pretty, you can stop several times and take photos and the outlook at the top is also very good. Definitely worth a visit.
We rode from Jindabyne up to Charlotte Pass on our motorbike. Paid $6 for the privilege (well worth it, scenery is great) the pass also lasts for 24 hours and if going through Thredbo you can use it the next day.
Sure the area isn't as big as Perisher or Thredbo for downhill, but there's still plenty to keep you busy. Add to that the main range, an area easily ten times Perisher and Thredbo combined, with the steepest runs in Oz and you're set. The ski in ski out of the lodges is great, being able to ski to your door for a hot lunch and then ski out again makes the day very easy. The new cafe half way up the chairlift is a great meeting place on a sunny morning for a hot choccy or coffee and is an easy walk from the lodges for those who don't ski.The walk up Mt Stillwell is a must since you're really on the roof of Oz and the view is amazing.
I recall three lifts at this resort. It is very small and accessible only by over snow transport in winter.Well worth a visit if you have not been but one day would be enough for most people who can ski. Access to main range and some great views are a bonus. Its isolation means crowds are not a problem and as it is the highest resort in Australia it should have good snow cover. Probably a good location if you are into Nordic Skiing as the alpine skiing is limited.I spent many family holidays here as a child and had a ball. The hotel there is becoming historic, in Australian standards, and is worth a visit. Although last time I went it was in need of a freshen up.
I did a day trip to Charlotte Pass from Perisher, and I enjoyed the day. The Daytripper Pass, including a simple lunch, was good value. The problems I had were related to there being too much snow, and because there wasn't many people, I couldn't make out the signs for the runs. I think that more/bigger signs would be good for first timers. The oversnow transport was a fun experience. The staff were ok, but a bit more stand offish than at Perisher - perhaps this reflects CP as a quieter place?I'd like to have another go.
We have just returned from 4 day ski holiday at CP with out two young boys. It was our first time at CP and having tried all the other resorts in NSW we will definitely only be returning to CP. The location is spectacular and is only accessible via over snow transport. The cost of the over snow transport and ski tube is expensive but a holiday in the snow is never cheap. It was definitely worth paying a little extra for the benefits of the secluded location. There are only a small number of lodges in CP so the best thing was having no crowds or queues for lifts despite being school holidays. There is no mobile phone reception in the village which was actually nice to switch off from the world for a few days. Heaps of snow during our stay and the whole resort was open which I understand is rare for so early in the season. The lift tickets desk / ski hire place seemed poorly organised with only one person working. We waited for over 1.5 hours to buy lift tickets and hire our gear which was frustrating. Also disappointing that the ski shop closed for lunch which further delayed us getting on the slopes on our first day. This was the only downside of our experience.Would highly recommend CP to others and look forward to returning again one day soon.
This resort is the absolute best place to learn how to ski. It has a nick name "Island in the Snow". This is what makes Charlotte Pass a gorgeous destination for anyone wanting something different. It is a small resort but alot of fun. The cocktail bar is just lovely to experience with a charming atmosphere. Alot of the accommodation, like everywhere in the snowfields, is a little tired but the beautiful surroundings make up for that. This is not accessible via roads during winter, so be ready for a great new experience.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. There are great tracks to take walks with great look outs to take in the views. The landscape and the scenery made for amazing photo shots. Use the aerogard though in summer, there are too many flies.
We have been going to do this for many years, and we are so glad we finally have done it. You travel in snowmobile over the snow from Perisher to CP, about 40 minutes. What a great journey across the snow!!! With the day tripper you get hot lunch and lift access. There are 3 different packages depending on your needs. If you can go on TUESDAYS there is a great special at moment. It is usually $99 per person, BUT ON TUESDAYS it is $99 for 1 and second is ONLY $2 !!!!What a great deal. You can drive to Perisher and you only have National Park fee, $27 per vehicle ,or, you can get Skitube which cost us $84 for 2. You can get choice of meals in the Bistro or Tuesdays is barbecue day, in the Cellar Bar. You have a choice of steak, chicken or sausages, and several salads and a bread roll. Great meal indeed. Another reason to go on Tuesdays.
Loved it. Awesome views. But when you get told to rug up, they mean it! Worth every bit of cold tho.
