Lovely shady grounds with unusual tree roots and welcome shade from the sun. Typical ornate church and at certain times in the morning in summer the sun shines through the windows in the dome onto one of the side altars. Saw a lovely wedding that spilt out onto the Piazza at the bottom of the steps where there is a great eating place.
Definitely worth a visit: it is majestic in the centre of the city on a large piazza with a small garden on the side of the church. August 29 is San Giovanni's feast and being the patron of Ragusa there is a large feast in town. The procession through the city is a must for many locals. I have witnessed people walk the procession barefoot while holding large candles.
When compared to other churches of Italy, this might best be described as just another church. It is well positioned at the top of the city center square and therefore I would consider it to be well presented.Worth the time if one is visiting the city center.
This great cathedral doesnt look much from Via Roma as its hemmed in by the shops but the view from Via Matteotti is stunning in the sun with the golden colour of the stone and the terrace with its shops & cafes. The inside is rather dark but it has a wonderfully ornate ceiling. I visited just before Palm Sunday when the altar was hidden by a lent tapestry.
We did really enjoy the visit of this magnificent cathedral. Do not miss it, particular the egg shape form of the church.
