Worth the stop if you are walking around town- it's the foundation of the town square. An enormous church, worth a walk inside and getting pictures outside.
the basilica is in the process of being done up and is looking really good, you can go up on the roof which is a brilliant white, sunglasses needed, the view is fantasic. Also the paintings inside of the points of the cross are very moving. There is a small fee for the roof visit, the clock mechanism is British 1850 which you can see when on the roof.
We did the roof tour a year ago when you could only go out on part of it because of the renovation projection. This year, they're mostly done one the roof and we got to go out on most of it. Not to be missed!
Collected my ticket round the back of the weather worn Cathedral, $3 and walked back up the side to a small door. A man takes your ticket and you climb the stairs to the roof, a beautiful, brilliantly white series of domes and small towers. With shoes off the surface if amazingly cool to the touch given the tremendous heat of the Leon sun. Great views of the surrounding colonial rooftops and churches as well as the many volcanoes in the distance. Well worth it. When then exterior is painted it will look amazing. You need your sunglasses for going on the roof.
A must see in Leon! pay the $3 to climb up to the roof. well worth it with great views of the city and surrounding volcanoes
Who doesn't like cathedrals. I travel to different countries and make sure that I visit their cathedral. Beautiful as I see it on picture. Just love the architecture.
it was interesting that most of the information that I could find about the Cathedral centred on the fat that you could go on up to the roof and walk around up there. Most of the descriptions missed the fact that the inside is beautiful. A marked departure from most Latin American churches in that it was more subdued in its religious decorations; more simple, less ornate. The giant sized paintings depicting the stations of the cross were phenomenal! Worth the visit for those alone. And, oh yeah, the views from on top of the Cathedral ( you are only up maybe 40 feet) are great - from there you can see the several of the nearby volcanoes and at least a half dozen beautiful churches.
Beautiful, no cars or bikes allowed. It is quiet, there are lots of people and children running around. Great place to chill and people-watch. We come here almost every day to let our girls run around and play with other children on the plaza.
This is supposedly the largest cathedral in Central America and it looks it but it desperately needs refurbishing especially on the exterior which is in a terrible state. The interior is cavernous and the alter is spectacular. You can even go out and wander about the roof which is most unusual and gives a good view of the town.
Don't see Leon without seeing the Cathedral, and particularly by going up on the roof! View and perspective of the entire region.
