Beautifully groomed, long, wide runs. Good facilities and food at base buildings. Little if any lift queues. Plenty of powder and great tree skiing for those that want it.
snow, slopes, food, lifts, weather, staff, slope grooming all one could ask for in a ski resort. second visit and will not be the last. ENJOY.
Read my review of the resort. I can't possibly type all that again. In short, it was amazing. If you like snow play, deep fresh powder, and a feeling of freedom on the slopes, you will love it here.
The real draw of Rusutsu is the tree skiing. The piste runs essential trace the ridges. The adventure is dropping off the ridge and skiing through the trees. Most of the tree runs end in drainage that leads back out to a run. It's pretty hard to get lost. And, like most of Hokkaido, the snow can be great. It's not guaranteed but there's a good chance. The resort more Japanese than Niseko and far less crowded. It almost felt like we had the place to ourselves.
Very strange vibe to the place. Reminds me of a deserted cold war era ski resort. Snow quality is significantly worse than nearby Niseko. Runs are basically flat, their only idea of a black run is moguls. Forget the place and go to Niseko and if you are trying to avoid the crowds go to Moiwa.
Aside from my ideas on the hotel, the skiing itself is good. There are 3 mountains to choose from. West, East & Isola. All are accessible from either side of the road via gondola. The skiing at West mountain seems most limited and best for beginners but there are a couple short black runs up topEast Mountain is next with two longer runs then Isola being the best with the biggest varietyAll lifts and gondolas are pretty quick and if you are there on weekdays there's rarely a wait to get on. Weekends get a bit busier though with some longer queues first thing but by afternoon it spreads out a little.Good fun but maybe less challenge than Niseko
Don't bother going to Niseko, it's over crowded with Australians compared to here. Large ski area with more space to breath. We had a fantastic day skiing here and even after two days of no snow we were still able to do some quality powder riding. The park is better than Hirafu, they have a rainbow rail here which was pretty exciting to see considering the other resorts in the area don't have much in terms for freestyle. All the lifts were high speed, and some of the gondola runs are actually pretty long. Accommodation.. Downside, impossible to get unless you stay in the hotel which is very expensive. Come here for a day trip, there is a daily shuttle from Hirafu I think it was roughly 6,500¥ for bus and all mountain pass. There was another company but they were very disorganised and did not run to the schedule (left us waiting at the Hirafu welcome centre for an hour as they had decided to cancel the service) nisekoshuttlebus
