Another attraction you really can't miss when in the Reggio area, it is the Locri Archaelogical Site with its small annexed Museum. At approximately the 104th km on the SS 106 Jonica, this site represented one of Italy's most important Greek Colonies, Locri Epizephiry, the ancient city, the modern Locri being built 4 km to the North! Here, after you visit the pretty small museum, yet packed with invaluable finds of the Magna Graecia period (Pinakes, vessels, amphoras, etc..), you can have the chance of taking a really pleasant and suggestive walk through the ruins of a city which was once considered in Magna Graecia times as one of Italy's most important places. The place is surrounded all around by the typical mediterranean vegetation and landscape which will contribute in making your walk a small, relaxing naturalistic excursion, as well as a cultural one.
This is a large area to cover so choose a good day for a walk through the grounds. The house contains most of the information of the Site and many artefacts from the different eras. The day we went, in October, it seemed like we three were the only visitors.
This is a fabulous site where ancient ruins have been (and are still being) unearthed. The museum is modern and filled with many amazing artifacts which have been found during excavations. The grounds, however were quite overgrown and not well signposted. When we made our way (about a kilometre or so) to Casino Macri (an old farmhouse built over the ruins of an ancient Roman Bath house) it was closed except for people who were currently excavating around the grounds. We were not told this at the museum where we bought our tickets, nor were we given a map! We had to drive to the greek/roman theatre and this was incorrectly signposted and difficult to find. Overall, it is such a marvelous place - it would be so good to see improvements made so that all attractions were more accessable. (I'd love to explore the whole park on segway, for example!) Nevertheless at a cost of only 4 euro each it was well worth the effort to discover some of Italy's amazing history.
