This was an easy hike up to a very rewarding vista. Unfortunately it was a hazy day when we went, but that didn't detract much from the beauty. I would recommend this hike to anyone looking for a quick 1.6 mile hike (good news is you hike up to get there and down to get back).
There is a park fee only to enter/drive into Skyline drive, which is good for a few days (there is no additional charge for this particular spot). We took a chance from the reviews on this place, and squeezed in a visit before sunset. The easy hike may feel like a challenge if you're out of shape, but not at all taxing if you take your time. The view at the end of the hike was absolutely rewarding. We lingered at the summit until after sunset. I wished photographs could capture the overall impact of the visit. I haven't reflected/meditated (as I did there) in a long time. I recommend this place for early morning or late afternoon (sunset) visits.
Stony Man has at least 3 hiking paths from the lot we parked in. I hiked "B" last Saturday with 4 adults and 2 kids under 10. It took us about 90 minutes to complete the hike. There is an incredible vista half way through the hike with amazing views. Rock climbers were going up and down the face of the mountain and the kids loved it. The hike was refreshing and easy, and I hope to do it again once the leaves peak.
We had a great time here. We had two teenage boys and two 70 somethings. The view is excellent. Also visit the Skyland area.
Nice hike up Stony Man with daily tours offered free by Park Rangers (assuming in season only). We received lots of interesting information on the hike (why Virginia Hams were so sweet, etc.) and the kids had a great time. Highly recommend, easy elevation change, but not stroller friendly. Fabulous views when the leaves are changing.
An unhill hike to a beautiful view of the valley below. You are up with the vultures and eagles when you get to the top. Sit awhile and experience the peacefulness. Definitely worth the hike!
Easy enough for everyone, give yourself 3-4 hrs and enjoy the beauty that awaits around every bend. Shenandoah is one of the earth's most beautiful places.
Such a fun hike, did the full trail and it did take about 3 hours that gave us time to stop at really appreciate both Stony and Little Stony views.
We hiked the Stony Man Trail in Shenandoh on Scenic Drive on Oct. 3rd, 2014. It had just rained so it was foggy in areas. We didn't get the full view, only glimpses, but it was still pretty, colorful, and worth our time. We sat on the rocks and ate lunch. The trail is easy and lovely and a good choice.
This hike has a high return - not a ton of effort but great views once you're there. Easy to do with the kids and very close to the lodge if you happen to be staying or eating there. Go for it.
