People wonder why anyone would go to the cemetery, but this is also a registered botanical park. It is beautiful! And the interesting people and history you will find here will keep you wandering for hours. Make a stop at the office for a map. Go to the pond to watch the swans. And make sure you go through here in the spring. The dogwoods, azaleas and other flowering trees and bushes are not to be missed.
We often hike in this 297 acre historic cemetery in the middle of Louisville. Most of Louisvilles history makers are buried here. Most popular and famous are Col. Harland Sanders and George Rogers Clark and Family. The Cemetary is park like and especially beautiful in the in the spring when everything is blooming and after a winters day snow. We prefer to walk it but driving lanes cover much of the property. Be sure to get a map from the entry guard if you aren't very familiar with the place or it may take a while to find your way out. The map will also identify the many notables whose remains are resting here. This place is so special we even included it on a list of must sees for out of town guests who were attending our wedding.
Very well kept and clean. I use to go as a child for school projects all the trees have a plate with what type of tree it is. My kids love to feed the ducks. beautiful place and lots of history.
Yes, it is a cemetery. But, it is also a national arboretum with beautiful landscaping and wonderful architecture. The expansive grounds (600 acres?) contain a union burial ground, a confederate burial ground, rolling hills, a lovely lake and nearly two centuries of Louisville's most illustrious departed. Graves are marked with everything from simple stone to elaborate monuments. Some of the city's best sculpture is here as well.Trees are discreetly labeled with species and origin info. Flowers are in bloom from early February to late November. Children will enjoy feeding the geese, ducks and swans that call Cave Hill home. I haven't seen a peacock there in several years, but I hear the one is still living there as well.My husband and I walk in Cave Hill often and always enjoy the beauty, serenity and nature that surrounds us.
Never seen a cemetery like this back at home.Surprisingly it didn't feel the least bit depressing, being at a cemetery and all. Also Colonel Sanders' grave is a must see!Couldn't find the "Jesus is my swingset" grave, though.
A beautiful cemetery with lots of Kentucky history. I'm a bourbon fan and finding the sites of legends such as Pappy Van Winkle, WL Weller, Stitzel, Beam and Brown made for an interesting day.
I was more than pleasantly surprised when my daughter suggested we drive through the first time. This cemetery is full of history and beautiful vistas - huge trees, duck ponds, hills. We'll return again and again.
Fascinating history in this cemetery especially the Union and Confederate graves. The love letter left at Sandy Twist's grave is beautiful. It is very picturesque and definitely worth a visit.
The grounds are well kept. It is very nice for a stroll. There are plenty of hungry geese and ducks. Just be careful of the aggressive geese. The cemetery does have limited hours so always check to be sure it is open when you go.
Col. Sander's grave is here and you can follow the yellow line to it's location. Also has many other famous Louisvillian's graves here. Beautiful cemetery well maintained, and though it sounds a bit morbid, lots of visitors stop in here for a photo at the Col's graveside.
