It's interesting to try to imagine what the harbour was like in its industrial heyday. Visiting the outer harbour at low tide, we were impressed by the huge tidal range of the Severn. Our only complaint was that there is little information available regarding the sites history.
We drove here thinking there would be nice little cafes to sit and have a coffee, how wrong we were. We did sit and take in the so called view. Not worth the detour
Not much there, but it's in a lovely area with great views across the estuary. There weren't many boats to see, but the yacht club had coffee and cakes for sale and the sun was shining!
This is a nice spot for a winter walk, but be aware there are no railings at all, so small children should be kept away from the water side. There is a man made fall of water as the harbour gates lead into the river, I've never seen this before. When you get to the end it does open out into a lovely view up and down the river. There really is nothing there except a pretty walk, so don't go there expecting to be entertained. There is not even a tea hut, or at least there isn't in January.
The history of this place is intriguing as it was once a very busy harbour. You can feel its a place steeped in history. Its a nice place to go for a walk although be warned as others mentioned there are no facilities but there are boards with information. There are great views of the Severn and what I think was the old Berkeley Power Station. There is a free car park
Took a trip here with my husband and dog and I must say it was a lovely walk. It was on a weekday so I am not sure if that makes a difference but it was lovely and quiet with a few other dog walkers and visitors. Nice views across the Severn and very peaceful and relaxing. No places to sit for a drink or food though so if that is something you are after during the visit then do bring along a flask but otherwise there are places close to drive to and stop off.
Rather disappointed when we arrived, as there were works going on to improve the parking area and in the harbour so quite a lot fenced off. Walking through to the harbour was shocked to see something so well advertised had nothing there, nothing open not even to get a cup of tea. We did wander about to ensure we hadn't missed anything but nope we hadn't. Must say it would be a nice place to walk the dogs, but we didn't have them this time.
As I live in Lydney, I have visited this place on many, many occasions. This place is good for people of all ages; Walking, Cycling, Dog Walking, Boating, Photography or just to admire the views. It also has a Yacht Club on-site and a place to store boats. It is also a popular place for -bird watching'.The only improvements that I can recommend are decent toilet facilities and a snack bar, or at least somewhere on-site which sells food.
We came upon this in the depths of winter and it was fascinating to walk around and look across the river, e.g. toward Sharpness where we had recently been. The maps and info boards are quite helpful. Yes, it would be nicer in summer to have cafes and toilets but we hadn't expected them - just followed the brown sign. Although the trip through the industrial estate and sign Private Road nearly put us off! Well worth the effort and such an important part of local history. We'll be back in better weather and possibly at high tide to see the water's activities.
A beautiful, unspoilt location. Ideal for peaceful bracing walks with the constant yet everchanging view of the River Severn. Lacking in services however- no toilets or coffee shop but ideal for a picnic. Just make sure you take your rubbish home as also lacking in bins!
