Cool little place for history buffs. However, it is a bit hard to find as it is inside/underneath the shopping mall that was build over the ruins. Admission was free and I spent about 1 hr looking at the artifacts and ruins. Make sure you ask at the information desk for an English translation of the interpretive signs. They have a booklet with almost all the information translated. I would recommend at least a small visit, even for those not interested in history.
Discovered when the Hilton Hotel chain began excavations for a new hotel, the Temple of Isis is located under a shopping centre and could be a little hard to find if you were visiting on a DIY basis. The guide was easy to understand (English speaking tour) and happy to answer all our questions. There is a vast amount of Roman history in Mainz and this is a fascinating addition. Photos allowed
I loved it! What great history is buried just under foot. Take the time to look and learn. It is in a shopping center and a bit hard to find - I walked right past it. Very glad I went!
We've seen a ton of ruins, and this one isn't spectacular for that. But, it's really fun that it's under the mall. I love to bring visitors here because it's quick, the Romerpassage parking garage is right next to it, and it's free. It is all in German, but you can still get the idea.
I am proud of my hometown and love to show it off to my friends from the US. One of the more recent discoveries are artifacts dating back to Roman days. The site was discovered when an old after the war shopping center and the former site of Woolworth was rebuilt. Located below the new Roemer Passage is a small but very interesting museum. Admission is free but donations are gladly accepted. My personal "Thank you" goes to the gentleman, a volunteer, who was so kind to tell my friends about the history of the site and the Roman live in the area in English!
Right in the shopping center, the remains of the temple are hard to find, but worth spending a few minutes looking for. We actually ended up with a tour guide in English, who was very knowledgeable and gave great explanations. It is smaller than I thought it would be, but they have a LOT of information and relics in a relatively small space. You won't regret stopping, and make sure to leave a donation as admission is free!
It was very clean & comfortable, but very dark lighting (for the purposeful effects). It looked fake, like a replica, too tidy for ruins. It was donation only.
This is an interesting site, and if you're in the area, it's worth a quick visit. It was difficult to find--it is INSIDE the Romerpassage (within the shopping arcade itself). The remains are almost 2,000 years old--that in itself is amazing! Everything is in German, though, so I missed out on a lot b/c I don't speak the language. If you're an English speaker, you can get a brochure in English at the info desk that will explain the highlights, but the film that was recommended in other reviews isn't available in English. It's free, which is a nice bonus. Europe has many impressive archaeological sites that are much more impressive, but this is a nice little find in the heart of Mainz.
Mainz is an old Roman town. So often when they prepare to build, they find more ruins. This occurred when they started building the Romer Passage. So they preserved the site and built the shopping center over it. There is no admission, donations graciously accepted. Tour and information plaques are no in English. There are a few attendants who speak English and if not busy, they will take you through. This is the only shared temple to both Egyptian and Roman gods ever found. Beneath it there have been Celtic ruins found.
Underneath the shopping center the Romerpassage (very close to the Landesmuseum) you can visit the remains of the ancient temple of Isis and Mater Magna, which are shown in a nice, kind of mysterious lighting. The entrance is free, so you can just pop in after shopping. In the room with the remains also some finds and artefacts are shown with some explanation.
