As an architect by profession I couln't stop holding my breath in some moments of the visit of this impressive building site - sometimes due to the adventurous statics, sometimes due to the inspiration and creativity to solve spacial problems without any education in the construction process (not even masonry)...But to top it all I met Don Justo himself, now 88 or so years old creator, hauling around big pieces of glass and wood, proving that he really still following his daily task to building this Church with his own hands (with the help of some 60years friends and 25years nephews). His comment to me as an astounded architect: "See, while you are sitting in your office, I have simply started to do this." Inspiring!
Wow, something that certainly left an impression! I am not sure what was more impressive: the Gaudiesque cathedral style building made out of every type recycled material imaginable, meeting 87 year-old creator Don Justo having lunch on his break from a 10 hour work day, cars parked inside the cathedral or the ability to walk all around, under and above the cathedral, not always feeling very safe on top of freshly (at least it seemed so) poured concrete. The sheer dedication and conviction of this man to envision and follow through on this project is inspiring. A short conversation with him revealed his utmost concentration on the project. He is unpretentious Spanish man with a very interesting history who still finds inspiration to work 10 hour days on his cathedral. If you want to see something completely unusual and see what a man's vision can accomplish, go and see it. About 20 minutes outside of Madrid. Please leave a donation.
By himself and 30-40 years later Don Justo has managed to build this 'Cathedral'. The fact that it stands ignored in the midst of working-class Mejorada del Campo and surrounding Henares area makes it all the more stunning.
During a 3 hour layover at the Madrid train station, my friends and I hopped on a bus to Mejorada. There was no one there when we arrived, but we could tell someone was around because there were loaves of bread and an apple set out for lunch. Walking around inside was surreal; we felt we were witness to something very important. Since we had a train to catch, we could only stay about 25 minutes. As we were leaving, we caught a glimpse of Don Justo standing at the top of one of the steeples, and shouted a quick thank you. My friends and I were all quiet on the bus ride back into the city. We had no words comparable to the testament of that place.
