This is the monumental cathedral which you may not miss while staying on Sicily. It is one of the most magnificent churches I've ever visited. Take your time to enjoy as much as you can from the centuries-old mosaics. Outside, you get a marvellous view as a bonus.
Monreale is Outside the city, but take the time to visit.one of the Most beautiful churches of the World,if a ranking is possible.something Special, like the Castel Del Monte in apulien.
This is the main attraction and our reason for going to Moneale. Make sure to get the audio guide. There is an amazing history of many centuries and cultures of Art in the Duomo.
This is a place that is difficult to drive to. We managed to squeeze our small Jeep Compass through harrowingly thin streets to get to the parking lot for the duomo. You take an elevator up to street level and proceed to the left to walk into town. The Square and the Duomo become obvious. On entering be prepared to be thrilled at the ancient mosaic work done is such 3D manner it is a wonder to behold. You are able to take photos as you wish, a departure from other Byzantine mosaic laden places we visited. The entire ceiling and walls and the entire place is spectacular, so take your time. Afterwards, go out and around the building and pay the fee to see the courtyard gardens and all the amazingly detailed carved and mosaic pairs of pillars that surround on all four sides. Very contemplative and romantic and a great area for that photo to frame when you get home. It's just lovely.
This was a pleasant surprise to me. After a while you can get serious cathedral overload, but this place amazed me. Perfectly preserved with beautiful mosaics, it was one of the prettiest and more interesting cathedrals I've seen. It is located high on a hill outside of Palermo, so there is lots of walking to get there, but most worthy of the trip. Also lots of cook shops outside the cathedral with beautiful ceramics.
It is probably one of the msot beautiful churches I ever visited. All the walls are full of mosaics depcting scenes of Jesus's life and those of the old testament. Amazing is the Pantocrator on the abs nd the icon of Mary.
I saw a lot of buses arriving the Duomo. When I come in I hardly can believe. It is one of the most beautiful churches I have been
For 6 euros, we expected to see something other than the cloister courtyard. Yes, the pillar mosaics were nice. But not worth the fee.
A 10 min bus ride from Palermo. A beautiful view of Palermo. The Church is a must see-beautiful mosaics inside.
The somewhat plain external façade belies the magnificent interior. Walking in, the sheer extent of beautiful mosaics almost overwhelms. The Norman King employed the best craftsmen, both Arab and Byzantine, for the high decoration, with the results that we are fortunate to see today. From the floor to the ceiling everything is wonderfully ornate. The nave and apse are filled with religious imagery in mosaic, with Christ Pantocrator the central apse figure. The floor is attractive, as are the numerous statues. The treasury contains lovely items including impressive vestments. One aspect of the exterior that is worth walking around to see comprises that of the apse area. It is richly decorated with numerous designs made of marble and tufa.
