Attractive upper moorland with terrain varying as it went down to the Guadiana. Which is the border with Spain in that part. Few little villages, some offering food and drink.Interesting wildlife.
We did a morning trail in Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana and what a great pick! Very calm area full of wild hares, rabbits and perderix. Very calm with headed towards Pulo do Lobo in Herdade do Pulo do Lobo just passing Amendoeira. The Pulo do Lobo waterfall is a beautifull drop for Guadiana river bull of brid life and a uniqueness hard to find in Alentejo.

The tourist office in Mertola has walk leaflets for free. Walks range from 2 to 10 miles and are well signposted However, you will need a car to reach them (apart from one which starts in Mertola).. Wildlife is easy to se especially in Spring.
My wife and I stumbled across this beautiful old town and castle while on a day trip. The castle originated in roman times and was eventually developed by the Moors before returning to Portuguese rule. What is amasing is that you can stand on top of the castle and immediately understand why it was built there. It defends the strategic river access at the top of this tidal point. No-where else in the world would you be able to roam freely (at no cost) over such a historic monument. and the castle is well preserved also when you consider how long it has been standing. The old town remains undisturbed by most of the modern world and you can relax at a pace suitable to the heat of the day.
