I absolutely enjoy this little slice of paradise located just outside of Newport. I generally visit here for casual walks and I enjoy the scenery of the rocks, waterfront, cliffs and shrubbery. The huge icicles on the rocks during winter is quite a sight. The paths are well maintained and while I cannot claim to be a huge bird watcher you're guaranteed to see a few interesting birds. I've been very fortunate to see the legendary Snowy Owl and capture it's magnificence with my camera. There are also hawks, ducks, other owls and a couple herd of deers that either live there or frequent the reserve. It's perfect for that birdwatcher or for just a casual stroll, quite a gem in my book.
We biked out to the point from Easton Beach and then walked the trails. Beautiful place. Lots of birds.
Nice trails along the water, soak in a nice view and ocean breezes. Be careful, as this area is littered with poison ivy. Interesting walk through museum to view species of birds.
This has to different trails that are fairly level and easy to negotiate. We love to go down on the rocky beach at one of the many access points. They have a beautiful visitor's center with educational exhibits and bathrooms. A great way to spend a day in any season, bird watchers enjoy this location as well.
I discovered this on a bike ride, and came back with my wife to walk the trails. Superior ocean views from quiet trails. Well maintained trails at that. The visitor center is impressive with a wealth of information about the salt marshes and how important they are. If in the area, this is a must-do stop. Take a couple hours to relax here.
Trails of varying length overlooking the water provide the opportunity to view birds and flowers. Ranger station has restrooms, information about the sanctuary and a ranger to answer questions.
I have always loved Sachuest Point and enjoy exploring the different trails and rocky beaches. This time, we observed many winter birds including Harlequin Ducks. We also saw one elusive seal watching a fisherman. The nature center has wonderful displays and a wealth of information about the local ecosystems and wildlife. People of all ages can use the trails now.
Stumbled upon the treasure on a sunny, windy and cold November day. Since it was so cold and windy, we decided to drive around from our Newport hotel and explore. Coming upon this Wildlife Refuge, we parked and walked around a little. Looking out over the water from the edge of the cliff just took my breath away. Stunning view. Had it not been so windy we would have explored more. But this will have to be done at another time. We will be back.
Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown, Rhode Island is a beautiful rocky point jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean. If you are in Newport, Rhode Island to tour the Victorian era mansion museums or to go to the beaches, take 2 hours and drive 15 minutes west down the coast to Middletown to check this place out. There is ample free public parking available at the main lot. There is a central complex with bathrooms. Although, I am unsure of operating hours during the off-season in Fall and Winter. After you park, walk just a few minutes over to the nature trail and take the walk as it wraps around the point with the Atlantic Ocean in sight along the entire route. You can make the walk (or jog) on this nature trail for 1.5 miles and up to maybe 3 miles if you want to go further. The attached photos from my review were taken on 9-22-14 (last day of summer). Enough said. The photos that I attached speak better than my words.
Good place to hike around the bay . Quite and peaceful. Must do if you like walking. Does have leaning center .
