A nice place to view wild birds up close, no crowds, no noise, a free non profit facility run by caring people for injured raptors, but they help all wild animals when called upon. NO pressure to donate just a simple wooden box to drop a few bucks in, well worth seeing with the kids,
This is an interesting place to visit. Took my grandchildren and they enjoy seeing the large birds being helped.
Hawks, owls, eagles, falcons, vultures -- they're all here at this raptor sanctuary. Totally staffed by volunteers, this rehab center and sanctuary for birds of prey that cannot be released into the wild makes for a nice afternoon of strolling and learning. They even care for birds other than raptors; my favorite is the albino robin. The suggested donation is just $2, but be generous! It's a well-kept facility with a small gift shop and hand-made owl and bird houses for sale. On our last visit, we happened upon the release of a rehabilitated red-tailed hawk. It was a lovely sight!
Dedicated to saving injured Raptors and run totally by volunteers. Very quiet and calm place---good for families with children. You can get up close
Great place for family outing. Educational. Varieties of birds to watch and learn about. Family fully enjoy the experience of our visit.
It's regarded as one of the best free care and assistance facilities or injured, sick or orphaned wild birds in the USA, and especially for raptors. It was established in 1968 when Leonard Soucy bought 14 acres of land on the southern end of the Great Swamp in Millington, New Jersey. Today it has a medical infirmary, education building and a gift shop. It is a non-profit but donations are appreciated. A suggested donation is $2 and well worth the money. There are 70 exterior cages where permanent residence are housed. Permanent residence include hawks, eagles, falcons and owls. Due to there injuries they can not be released. Many hundreds of birds are nurtured to health and released, The permanent residence birds are used for education, foster parenting and breeding. Each cage has an information plaque so you can learn about the bird. A very pleasant staff will answer questions and special events like tour-talks and Raptor Photo events are scheduled. They have a website at http://theraptortrust.org/. The trust is right down the road from the Lord Sterling Environmental center and close to the Helen C. Fenske Great Swamp Visitor's center and hiking trails. The Raptor's Trust and Great Swamp makes for a fun and educational experience.
We like visiting this place when we are near the Environmental Center. Great to see the eagles, hawks, and other raptors up close. Kids love to see the birds and feel great knowing that they are helping the kind souls who maintain this establishment to care for the injured or sick birds.
An interesting 30 minute or so walk thru a raptor zoo of sorts. My nephews (2.5 & 4 years old) were really intrigued by the different varieties of owls, hawks, falcons and eagles. As were the adults. The bald eagles were the unanimous favorite followed by the owls. Plenty of woodpeckers and wild birds feeding along the path with a small gift shop. Very laid back place, just drop a donation in the wood box and help yourself to some literature. Whether you're serious birders or just a family looking for a short excursion you'll enjoy the Raptor Trust. Tips: Bring small binoculars to enhance your viewing experience. Bug spray won't hurt either.
Great for kids. Interesting place to tour and learn about the variety of raptors in NJ. There is a guided tour of the birds they have helped that have not been releases and stories about the ones that have been released. Pick a day that is not too humid to be outdoors. There is a schedule to follow to be driven up or walk up to the sanctuary.
fabulous local place to learn about and appreciate the variety of raptors in this area. great for kids. odors can get a bit ripe, so if you have the option, go when the weather is not hot and humid.
