Everyone has heard of this famous theater. We waited many years for the repair work to be completed and were finally able to get tickets to see Nutcracker. The ticket prices, however, are extortionate. Yes, it is a iconic venue but I have been to several theaters in Moscow where the performances were just as good, better seating, better views and far cheaper.
Lucky enough to get free tickets and a tour, I was excited to visit one of the most storied places in Moscow. Not a ballet fan I was not too concerned with the performance rather than the location and experience. Thet show was poorly presented, but the dancers seemed unreal, and the music did lift the evening. However the customer service was terrible, treating guests like cattle at every chance. And around the theatre I was shocked. Having walked many times by it, I decided to explore the streets and environs after the show. Prostitutes seemed to be everywhere, and especially children. On the side of the theatre closest to Lubyanka I saw police hassle a streetwalker yet do nothing when a fight broke out between 2 young girls (barely in their teens) over a client. Felt very unsafe for the first time in a long while in Moscow!
Although I do not like classical music nor ballet, I went to a show at the Bolshoi theater. It is really classy, a nice experience.
The Bolshoi theatre is one of the places that a visitor must see in Moscow. It is one of the best and biggest of the seven historical opera houses in Europe and if you want to see History with your own eyes it would be a good idea to go there. Now one can buy tickets online, so there is no need to buy from scalpers who are numerous and obnoxious, or from hotels which charge even more than scalpers!!!There have been many reviews of the recent renovation but I was pleasantly surprised at the result. I did not like everything, of course - but who does? The theatre is one of those opulent, gold and red velvet places with wonderful acoustics and usually rather top-rate performers. Advising what to see or to hear there is useless unless you plan your trip around the Bolshoi programme, but any performance will be above the average. If you are a connoisseur you will not be disappointed. The admission is usually 40-45 minutes before the performance starts, so be there early and explore the premises. There is a bit of a confusion about the "old" and the "new" Bolshoi theaters. I recommend to visit the old, historical building is you have a choice. Or both. The performers are the same, but the new building and its stage are smaller. And some of the larger performances run only at the old Bolshoi. There are three metro stations very close to the Bolshoi (about a hundred yards), so I would advise to take the metro there because the Moscow traffic is notoriously slow at this time of the day.
Bolchoi theatre is selling billets to agencies and not directly or on web. When you call it is full and only agencies have billets...but same seats varied from 1 to 3000 rubles commission without any reason... not like in st. Petersbourg marinskyi where you can buy on line your billet...
I went to a old play Soviet Union a little boring because of language,I wouldn't recommend a old play but more a ballet to foreigner .Being also a Parisian. I was a little disappointed but anyway you have to see it once in your life Just take a visit ! Or a ballet and dream to be back in old Soviet UnionI really like this feeling
We only had the opportunity to visit the "small" Bolshoi theatre; an oxymoron, since Bolshoi means big or great in russian. We attended a ballet performance and were absolutely enchanted by the beauty of the dancers and the amazing level f skill. Not surprising; after all it's the number one ballet company of the world.
I listened to the opera "The Tsar's Bride" at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow!Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre gorgeous renovated! Before the start of the show, I had a small tour of the updated Bolshoi Theatre.Gold stucco decorated lodge in the auditorium.Beautiful crystal chandeliers illuminate the bright spacious halls and auditorium.Sofas and chairs upholstered in red velvet and trimmed with gold. All this creates a picture of greatness and wealth. Very pretty! The scenery on the stage passed the real picture of the life of the royal family andsimple peasants. Gorgeous real horse, polished to a shine, majestically walking across the stage. Performers sang wonderfully and professionally.Costumes, wigs artists were chosen with skill in the spirit of the era, which was shown in the play. I looked at the stage and listened to arias from operas with bated breath.Leaving the theater did not want to. Bolshoi Theatre is beautifully illuminated at night.Nice to sit in the square with a fountain in front of the theater on a summer evening.
