The view of the entrance to Guanabara Bay is really unforgettable! Sugar Loaf Mountain on one side, Santa Cruz Fortress on the other, the vast Atlantic Ocean, the constant wind, the sunshine on your head will altogether make this visit special . If you are visiting Rio de Janeiro, you must extend your visit to Niteroi and include Santa Cruz Fortress in your program.
The views are great but there is always a guide with you that doesn't give you enough time to enjoy the beauty of the Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Guanabara Bay.
A trip to Fortaleza de Santa Cruz calls for the best part of the day if you really want to experience the area. I didn't read any reviews before I went and glad I didn't. It was a quick ferry ride to Charitas from Praca XV then we grabbed a taxi (17 reais). We did the tour which was done in Portuguese, but they did try and find an English speaking person to help. The views are awesome without a doubt. On our way there by taxi we went past small beaches so we decided to walk back to Charitas which I would highly recommend (couple of hrs if stopping taking photos) as we saw many amazing sites, a few monkeys, very friendly people and some great seafood restaurants. We stopped for lunch and wandered through bay after bay of fishing boats and small beaches. We decided to take the bus back to Centro from Charitas which took us past Niteroi main beach, the Art Museum and over the Rio bridge for some spectacular views that you wouldn't normally see.The ferry costs 13 reais, bus from Charitas back to Rio 6 reais (over an hour travel time), The local buses are 3 reais but don't go to the fort, you can catch to near the fort and walk the rest of the way, although It's still cheaper to catch a taxi if there are 3 or more in your group. There are a variety of eating places which range in price from 10 - 35 reais for a fish dish, our 10 reais dish was huge, delicious and was washed down with an Antarctica Original. Perfect day.
Fortaleza de Santa Cruz has beautiful views which (maybe) is worth the trip. But get ready for the boring guide (at least the one I had) who sped through the memorized explanation like no other. You are better off visiting Forte de Sao Luiz where the views are way better.
The Fortress of Santa Cruz is located on the other side of the entrance of Guanabara Bay, in opposition to the Sugar Loaf, and Urca and Leme neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro City. Fortress has a wonderful view of Rio de Janeiro and the beaches of Niteroi (Icaraí and Boa Viagem). The Fortress has service guided tour that tells the story of Fortaleza and shows the facilities. Access is only possible by car as there is no public transportation to the site. Access is following the edge of San Francisco Beach where are some restaurants that also have views of the Guanabara Bay.
Santa Cruz is a superb fortress in the entrance of Guanabara Bay. Some parts of it were made of sand and whale oil.The visitor will have a magnifent view of Rio de Janeiro. The monument also has several attractions, with many historical facts related to the last five centuries. There's another fortress, newer than Santa Cruz, on the top of a nearby hill. A chance to see another perspective of Rio (from the opposite side). The only 'con' is the lack of regular transportation.
An informative tour whilst walking around the fort. The views in all directions means you can't put your camera down.
Nice destination with great views. Unfortunately the guide only in Portuguese. I imagine the history to be interesting.
Good place to imagine the Brazilian History which happened in this waters. You have a different perspective of the city of Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi. Nice place to visit.
It's free to visit the place and the navy ship is open for visit. It's interesting for those who have not been to any military site. There is a helicopter and some good souvenirs too.
