Let me preface this by saying that I absolutely HATE museums. Maybe I'm just getting old but this place is extremely impressive. It is located inside Nauticus/Battleship Wisconsin museum (fee) but the Hampton Roads Museum is FREE! I would highly recommend a stop here if you are on a budget and definitely stop here while you are visiting Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin (located on the same level as access to the Battleship). Great!
Spending two weeks in Williamsburg caused us to look beyond the late 1700's for something to do. Alas, nearby Norfolk has a naval museum including an old war ship! A quick look on travel sites and I learned that the museum was free! That turned out to be 1/3 true. The smallest (but to be fair, a fine part nonetheless) was free, but the most interesting areas, including the Wisconsin battleship, were areas where you needed a paid ticket. It's my own fault, just wish I would have figured that out before arriving.
Thank you for the kind words, our models are done by artisans and are to scale, based on the actual ship plans. The models normally take three years to complete.
I love military machines and history and this combines both. There are airplanes hanging from the ceiling, there are interactive stations for children, it is set up with plenty of space and amazing things to see. Never crowded and always interesting
Visited the USS Wisconsin early in the day before it got very warm & humid outdoors. We came back into this air conditioned facility to enjoy a leisure tour and learn of the Naval history of the area. This facility does provide an in-depth history and overview in this field. We found it well worth our time to tour the exhibits.
I found this very interesting and it kept me entertained while my husband was visiting the Wisconsin. The Wisconsin is way to expensive for retired folks to see....and you have to pay for parking! If you can walk a bit park in the mall parking up the road...still have to pay but much much less. The mall is across the street from the MacArthur Museum. I was fortunate to have an older gentleman give me a tour to this free museum. Enjoyed it very much.
Hampton Roads Naval Museum is located inside the Nautilus Battleship Wisconsin museum. You can visit it for free but the Nautilus /Battleship Wisconsin museum is a fee to enter. The museum was very good with many interesting exhibits.
really enjoyed the Naval Museum. we did not want to visit Nauticus or the USS Wisconsin. the Naval Museum is free, you have to climb some steps to get to the entrance. my wife's father was retired Navy and this was perfect.. it is basically a timeline of the United States navy. pictures, models, uniforms, artifacts and much more to be enjoyed. if you or your loved ones are or were Navy, go to this. doesn't take long.
The Hampton Roads Naval Museum has a very nice display showing the ships and events that have transpired throughout time in the Hampton Roads. The Museum has many model ships representing the centuries of military vessels that have plied the waves from the Chesapeake Bay to the Pacific Ocean,
This is part of the Nauticus and USS Wisconsin attractions and is a must see.You pass thru its lobby on the way to the Wisconsin. Has excellent scale models of many naval ships. Admission is free. One nice part is they have free postcards and historical pamphlets, paid for by your tax dollars.I have reviewed the Nauticus and USS Wisconsin separately.
