This was a great way of experiencing the Old Coach route. We were transported with the rented bikes to the start of our trail and there was lots of history boards to give information. The views change constantly. Some of the trail is quite challenging and a less experienced cyclist might have to get off and push for a very short distance. I would thoroughly recommend this activity.
It's a healthy and exhilarating way to take a holiday break. The bikes are really well maintained and easy to ride. The service helpful and friendly. I wished I had bike pants. Sore bottom after a couple of days. Have e transfers included excellent.
The owners are the most fabulous and accommodating. We arrived later than expected in Ohakune but Jane was there waiting for us when we finally made it. We chose the ride down Mt Ruapehu starting at 1600m. Jane drove us up the mountain and gave us lots of information about the area, Lord of the Rings filming sites, and an idea of what it's like in the winter time. The ride was spectacular (but I'd recommend allowing plenty of daylight hours for the trip, even if it only takes an hour so you have time to stop along the way) and Darren was waiting for us when we arrived back at the Station. Will definitely be back to do more biking in the area. Thanks again Jane and Darren!
What a fantastic professional service this is. Both Darren and Jane are helpful, friendly, and efficient. Though we had organised some of the accommodation ourselves they ferried us to the beginning of tracks, fixed some bike issues, helped us sort a bike for one of the group and Guided us though the Mangapoura track - we were not an easy group as we were pedestrian cyclists and our average age for group of 10 was 68+. Nothing was too much trouble fort either of them and the coffee was great before we set off. Their local knowledge was very worthwhile as detailed information on the track is not easy to find. They supplied maps and carted our bags from place to place - always checking up on us as they drove by. Could not recommend this business more highly.
We visit Ohakune on december 2014 and had plans to rent bicycles for exploring old coach road.because the weather was not the best,it was absolutely great to not have anything to negotiate in advance, just to come and go.The bikes (front suspended 29ers) was in excellent condition, and owner absolutely cool and helpful guy. Finally the weather got better and we enjoyed a wonderful ride.
Thanks Jay and Co for coming all the way from Alaska to experience the Mountains to Sea trail, it was a pleasure to assist you in your journey and we are glad that you had a great time whilst visiting N.Z. The Mountains to Sea Cycleway is a great way to get a true taste of New Zealand history and culture. This amazing trail traverses the alpine majesty of Mt Ruapehu, historic Old Coach Rd and bridle trails, tranquil indigenous forest via two National Parks, the legendary Bridge to Nowhere, a jet boat transport option for the Whanganui River link to Pipiriki, and a country road trail abundant with history and culture alongside the Whanganui River from Pipiriki to the Tasman Sea at Whanganui.
good easy transfers. Helpful friendly staff and decent equipment. make sure you book the transfers. Great views on a good day from top of mountain road
This must be the very best tour operator I have reviewed or experienced. With friends, we completed the five day "Mountain to Sea" cycle trail (reviewer figtree48 was one of our group). It was very well organised; Darren and Jane know what they are doing. Day by day service was excellent. Bikes were mechanically checked and adjusted after the one day bush section. At the end (Castlecliff beach in Whanganui) we were met with nice bubbly, excellent cheese, crackers, and grapes (also fruit juice). We stayed in a nice unit in Ohakune, a rustic but adequate backpackers in Ruatiti, and the wonderful Flying Fox lodge near Koriniti (see my review). Unfortunately, two couples also stayed at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge or, more accurately, in a thoroughly unsuitable, dirty cabin without running water, toilets, or even lighting (see my review). For some stays we self-catered and for others (Bridge to Nowhere Lodge and The Flying Fox Lodge) we were catered for. Meals at Bridge to Nowhere Lodge were vey good (although some of our group said that the cornflakes were stale); meals at the Flying Fox, together with the next day's packed lunch, were excellent. The bikes and accessaries we hired from the Mountain Bike Station were also excellent. Not much else one can say. These people are right at the top.
I have just had the most fantastic five days of mountain biking the Mountain to Sea bike track. Starting at Ohakune and finishing at Whanganui. Many thanks to Darren and Jane who had organised our accommodation and transported our luggage. I think the ride was made even better because of Darrens knowledge of the tracks and their history and by the support he gave us each day. This ride is a must!jenny and bruce clark
Well we took a 4 hour trip on the Old Coach Road... it was just great to cycle with my parents! First of all, I was imagining of just one road, flat. But then I was surprised to see all the nature around me! I was not expecting this because they didn't tell me but it was just wonderful. If you do like nature and hardcore cycling, this is highly recommended for you. Thanks to the staff that kindly welcomed us to this trip.
