Yes, it is quite amazing that it can be so close to San Sebastián, yet seems to have been moving at a totally different pace. We had very little time and only got here in the evening, which didn't give us much time to explore, neither here nor San Pedro, which might be worth exploring too. Spare a few hours, if you can. Walk around leisurely, climb up the hill, have a foot-long bocadillo in the restaurant up there. Chill out. Take some photos...I've blogged about how to get there and so on...am I allowed to post a link?http://nodirectionsknown.blogspot.com.es/2014/08/pasai-donibane-how-to-get-there-and.html
This is an adventure that I will recommend if you are in Guipuzcoa. You can arrive to Pasajes from San Sebastián by bus and there take a little boat to San Juan for less than 2 euros. There is a little village with some restaurants and bars, but if you really want to see the beautiful part of the place you have to keep walking through the little center until a pretty hight hill. On your way you will find a little sea food restaurant (cheap and really tasty food with amazing views). You will also find a little wild beach and if you are lucky it will be empty so you can have a good time in the water with your friends. If you walk all the hill up you will find an amazing view of the sea and mountains. And if you like climbing and walking trought dangerous roads you can keep walking.
We ended up here by accident - looking for the PADI dive centre (which we found and is brilliant- buceo donosti). It was fiesta week and we sat in a seafront restaurant and enjoyed the atmosphere. A very nice waitress then recommended we take the ferry across the inlet and follow the cliff top walk (part of the camino di santiago) back to San Sebastian. 2 and half beautiful hours of walking.A great excursion.
This fishing village is not one would want to stay at however is worth visiting as it is different from what you would expect at a fishing village. An easy drive from San Sebastian but take your GPS.
