Loved the feeling of being outdoors in the brilliant sunshine and feeling the heat of the sun on our faces as we walked from bay to bay. The walk up to the Monastery of St John was strenuous but fantastic.Take plenty of water with you though as its thirst quenching work. There's always a friendly person to give you directions.
One must remember that our visit was in August. With temperatures approaching 100 degrees F, I would not recommend walking anywhere during the daytime. However, at night, walking around the seaport was very pleasant. The shops had the usual tourist merchandise, but every once in a while you came across something really unique. Even months later, we still talk about our evening walks thru Patmos. Very relaxing and very scenic.
Walking here was wonderful. We finally made it to Patmos after years of planning and it was not at all anticlimatic. We suggest renting an aprtment or a home up in Chora. Timing your stay to be around Easter will result in added value, but be sure to also find some quiet shoulder season time here as well. Seek out Canadian acoustic guitarist Don Ross' oh-so evocative instrumental masterpiece, 'Patmos' to stoke your senses. I would not stay in Skala. Walking right out your own door for a starry night stroll is part of the draw here. Patmos features plenty of old-world charm, Full moon nights here can be special. Famous folks have bought here. The list goes on. We rented a little house that actor John Malkovitch and his wife had rented just before us. Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, the Agha Khan, Bowie, Bono and the diplomat Mr. Negroponte apparently own homes here, which they visit for brief periods in summer. It seems that Kim Basinger was buying the week we were there. Normally I wouldn't name drop this way and the fact that the stars come repeatedly to a location might in many cases cause us to stay away. But in this case it is different. Many of the aforementioned have credentials that qualify them as grecofiles. Satisfaction guaranteed on this serene island. If you don't benefit from your stay here, then you should probably stay home. I am done. the end.
This is not for people who are looking for a nightlife scene. It is a beautiful island with a more authentic feel. We ate at tavernas and small restaurants. The island was lovely, but small. There is not much to sightsee. If you are looking for quiet beaches, no crowds, this island is perfect. I would suggest pairing it with one other island.
Such a beautiful little Island with tiny streets and shops, very laid back Island, one of my favorite spots for holidays
I think that even if you are not an experienced walker you should try it (just be patient and prepared. My girlfriend wasn't :D) . Take plenty of water with you and keep an eye for snakes (on footpaths).Small distances, very few trees and hot weather.Afterwards you can swim and there is always the bus with most kind and polite drivers in Greece and Pink Floyd as background music on the bus ( from the driver).Where on earth does this happen on public transportation? I was blown away!!!
wonderful countryside walk from Chora to Skala. Stunning view in the twilight. Little paved pathway that meanders amongst old olive groves and fields.
lots of walks around patmos - beautiful views around the bays and harbour, through wildflower covered hills, up along the cobbled paths to the monastery of St John and Cave of the Apocalypse.
We always wanted to see this island where the book of Revelation was penned! It is dominated by religious buildings that are interesting but really do not add anything as all are supposed locations, nevertheless worth seeing...... A short stay is all that is necessary. We saw an old Bible from the 1oth century in the museum!
We visited Patmos in early october and were blessed with the most perfect weather: 14 days of azure skies and no rain! My wife and I are adventurous walkers and we seek out holidays with that potential plus relaxation, sunshine, swiming, eating, etc. We purchased our walking map in the newsagent on the main square in Skala and planned a different walk each day. The footpaths were re-assessed in 2013 and many have new-ish signs at regular intervals to guide you. There are some challenging routes on the north coast and across the southern most part of the island where you need to look for next sign or caign to ensure that you do not veer off onto a goat track. Always take plenty of water and proper shoes with good soles. You will be rewarded with some breath-taking views and splendid isolation other than the walks from Skala to Chora. Our favourites were the coastal paths where you can discover deserted coves with stoney beaches. We only saw 1 live snake which immediately retreated without incident. The people on Patmos are very friendly and helpful if you asked for directions. We had a thoroughly enjoyable vacation!
