We drove past the ranger station to the parking at the pinnacle. There is a circular path and going counter clockwise you will see a short path to an excellent view of the mountain. Continuing back on the loop there is a .8m path listed as moderate that will take you out and around. We opted to pass since we had our dog and it we weren't in hiking boots but it looked quite do-able with better shoes
My wife grew up near here. Never get tired of this place. Clean and beautiful, amazing views, one of the best kept state parks.
By far the best part of Pilot Mountain State Park is the view from the top of the overlook, which we've enjoyed many times and it never gets old. It is a great place for pictures as is the whole park. However, the section of the park near the Yadkin River is also very nice and interesting that you actually have to ford a creek with your vehicle to get there! The creek is not very deep usually but keep an eye on the weather as it can get over the running boards of a car quickly in a thunder storm!
We took a trip to the NC mountains today and made a stop at Pilot Mountain State Park. We were immediately impressed as we made the drive up the mountain. The park is spotless and extremely well maintained. The park does not have any vending But does have water fountains and very nice & clean restrooms! We.spent some time taking in the extraordinary views then we decided to put on our hiking shoes and try out the trails. As we were walking down the First trail we heard voices so we looked over one of the many overlooks and saw rock climbers. We decided to walk the Ledge Spring Loop, which went down and followed the mountain face around in a big loop back to the parking lot. This trail is +|~ 2 miles long and is fairly strenuous. But it is a great hike and it took us right by the cliff's where most of the rock climbers hang out....no pun intended...lol! Anyway we got to watch a group of climbers go up one of the steep rock cliffs...it was very cool and we cheered them on as they completed their climbs. This trail offers great views and a fairly rigorous workout for the hiker! There are several other trails and we plan on going back to hike them in the future. My wife and I both were very pleased with this park and approved of how our tax dollars are spent. Way to go NC Parks and Recreation! Great Job!
It was below freezing at the top, but that didn't stop us from hiking around the knob of Pilot Mountain. There have been improvements to the trail, and on a cold day, the wind really whips at the top. But you can truly see forever up here -- do not miss it!
Pilot Mountain is a spectacular must see park. I live in Winston Salem and it is only 1/2 hr away. I had driven by it dozens of times but never stopped. You can drive to the top. When I went, it said the parking lot was full, but it was about a 15 minute wait at the top for someone to leave and get a parking spot. This was in the height of the fall foliage, so I am sure there is less of a wait (or no wait) normally. The views are spectacular. You are literally on top of the world. I went on the Jomeokee Trail which takes you around the base of the peak. It is a pretty strenuous hike...but worth it. It is about an hour to get around and back to the parking lot.
a great state park with breathtaking views and beautiful scenery. there are trails to hike, and lots of birds and some wildlife to view.
A unique geological formation giving amazing views for miles around! There are well marked trails and walks to suit all abilities with an interesting but small visitor-centre at the base of the mountain.
What a view, a gentle s-curve drive up the mountain and there you are, looking out for miles and miles to surrounding counties and towns, comfortable walking if you have the right shoes, stone pathways and steps could be tricky for sandals or flip flops.
Great state park with a lot of hiking trails or a drive to the top for those non-hikers for a great view.
