The course is absolutely beautiful, and well maintained to say the least. The cart attendant grabbed our bags and helped us out before we could even ask or waive her down and had a big smile on her face to greet everyone, which we found very pleasant opposed to other courses we had visited in the area. Servers in the dining room appeared to treat customers like family. The clubhouse overall could use some up to date re-modeling, but this place is definitely worth paying a visit.
My wife and I always make it part of our US vacation. The course is always well groomed and great value at a low, low price!
Our group of 16 enjoyed the course in mid July. We have played here occasionally for several years. It's our favourite in the Port Huron area. So pretty, a park-like setting. The course was in good shape. The staff was very friendly, esp. in the lounge where we had a great lunch that came with the golf. One of our group had never played Black River. She said she would go back "in a New York minute". Hopefully very soon. Can't wait to play there again.
Dated dining room. At the Bar area the servers are wonderful and will bend over backward for patrons. The course is old, taken care of but now more like every public course out there. Some of the old glory can be seen in the course lay out. Worth the weekly daily rate.
Black river is a very nice well conditioned golf course . The food is great and the service wonderful.. pulled into the parking lot and an attendant unloaded our clubs and put them on carts for us and took them around to the pro shop..
Black River used to be a private club. Black River was considered one of better courses in Michigan. Since becoming public in the 90's the course has fallen on hard economic times and is showing this in the condition of the course. There used to be a dress code at the couse you had to at least have a collar on your shirt, but this aparently is not enforced anymore. When you only charge $20 for golf this is what you get. While the course as a whole is not bad there are some problems. No# 3,13 and16 greens are challenging, but a bit unfair as they are slinding off the hill and need to be replaced or repaired. The problem is there are only one of two possible pin postions at the top of the greens where the ball actually has a chance to stay on the green without rolling back down hill and off the green. The pine tree on no# 16 needs to be trimmed or taken down it is located on the right side next to the green. This tree is huge and if you get anywhere near it you have to take an unplayable. In the fall or anytime there are leaves or seedlings falling onto the greens the grounds crew seems to ignor this fact and does not keep the greens clear. I not just talking just a few leaves here, but I have seen the greens almost completely covered with them. It is like they did not even take the time to check them in the morning. Also what is with removing all the rakes from the bunkers with 3 or 4 weeks of golf remaining in the season ? Lazy ?
The outdoor gardens were perfect for a family wedding. Adorable water feature and nice peaceful setting. Inside was a good size room offering nice views of the trees and river. Catering was good, service was attentive and every amenity available to have a celebration.
Fantastic course and good food after. I've golfed here a few times as a family member is a member of the club. Prices are very reasonable and the club house is well appointed.
Nice track, lots of trees, not good if you hit a fade, greens were in great shape. Tee boxes average. Price was great.
A great course, just minutes from the Canadian / US bridge in Port Huron. Excellent prices for cart and golf. The staff is very helpful and the food in the club room is reasonably priced and delicious.
