We traveled from Villa O'Higgins in Chile to Lake Desierto via the jeep track (Chile) and single-track/hiking path (Argentina). This is a popular backpacking route, but we were traveling on mountain bikes (be prepared for lots of hike-a-bike sections if you do this) and doing the route as a day trip. We had a reservation on the Lake Desierto "ferry" for 6:30 p.m. and had arranged for a driver to pick us up on the other side and take us to El Chalten. Long story short, as it turned out at the last minute we were the only two passengers for the boat, and although as late as 5:30 the immigration officer said the boat was on schedule, it never showed up. All the evidence points to the boat owner simply deciding not to make the trip to pick up only two passengers. He probably thought we had camping equipment with us because most one-way passengers do. In any event, he eventually would give our driver (and the company he worked for) a couple of different and equally implausible explanations as to why he did not pick us up, but they were worried sick, thinking we were lost in the wilds of Patagonia, and in the meantime we spent a cold, windy night and the entire next morning in a refugio, made possible only by a couple of heartfelt appeals to the kindness of the border guard. The area around O'Higgins and El Chalten is beautiful, and I expect you can find a way to enjoy it that does not involve relying on the Lake Desierto boat service.
The lake circuit is a nice hike to do after you've already done Fitz Roy (los Tres) and Torre. Lago del Desierto is about 40km from El Chalten along a dirt road. We took a bus there and back and it was quite comfortable (Las Lingas I think was the company...). Because it takes about 2 hours to get there, Desierto isn't over-run with people! The scenery is incredible, and we especially enjoyed the Humuel glacier. Sure, its an extra 25 Ar pesos (~5USD), but the views once you get to the mirador are awesome. Its not a huge glacier like Perito Moreno or Grey, but you can get pretty darn close to it if you really want to. Definitely a place to visit if you've got time!
We got a ride to the lake and then biked back to Chalten (37km). There's a fun little mountain biking circuit to get into the beach on the lake, which we really enjoyed. The lake itself is quite and beautiful. We hit Glaciar Huemul (a ~1.5 hour round trip side hike, which was amazing) and a few waterfalls on our bike ride back. Highly recommended!
