With a friend over from the States we wanted to take him somewhere interesting so we settled for Portsmouth. We were not disappointed, managed to park on the street near the dockyard gates, and walk straight in to admissions office. We hadn't booked on line, something that is probably a good idea so we were slightly overwhelmed by the number of ticket options. It also looked a bit pricey until you realised that the tickets were valid for multiple visits over a year. Good value for the locals. As we had limited time we just wanted to visit the Victory, only to be told that the earliest "slot" was 3:30pm! So we opted to tour HMS Warrior and we were so glad we did as it was amazing! What really made the tour fantastic were the ex naval experts who explained things to us. One of them showed us us how the breech loaded cannons operated (no he didn't Fire a broadside at the railway station)! But he did explain to our American guest the British Navy's role in the American Civil War. To get the most out of your visit take advantage of these lovely guides. The ship is huge so you need plenty of time to explore. If you see a sailor sitting doing rope work and knots be sure to ask what a "tow rag" is used for! Because it was cold and windy after our visit to Warrior we decanted to the wonderful Spinnaker Tower and after a smooth ride in the lift were amazed by the fabulous view. Lots of photos were taken and the section of glass floor a real test of faith ( or stupidity)! Then we walked up the stairs to the higher platforms and brilliant views of the dockyard and the Isle of Wight. On the practical front the designers had sensibly put a loo up there. Not as tall as Seattles Space Needle but still a worthwhile experience.
We spent over two full days here on our short break. The all inclusive ticket is really fantastic as it not only gives you access to the ships but also the Mary Rose exhibition building and a boat trip round the harbour seeing some modern navel ships in port. Included is a water bus to take you to a submarine and also explosives museums across the harbour. It is also valid for a whole year. The Exhibitions are first class with plenty of interaction. We were unable to do it all and will be back before the running out of the years use on the tickets.
went back in March to see the Victory. very good guide and enjoyed the visit. The dockyard is well worth a visit and the ticket lasts a year
非常棒的地方,很友善的员工,很不错的布局。物有所值,因为在接下来的一年里都可以来这里,不限制次数哦。迫不及待想要看到即将开馆的新博物馆。到那时我们还会来的。
All attractions were wonderful. Museums well worth visiting. £28 per person for ALL attractions was a bargain.
Thus us the second time we have visited and we love it. Lots of things to do. It took us 2 days to get to everywhere. Lots of information, different things for all ages and lots of places to stop and have a coffee. The harbour tour is well worth the time and you can get off at the other side of the dock. Well worth the money
My wife and i took our 6 year old to see some impressive old ships of our Royal navy. These included HMS Warrior, HMS Victory and The Mary rose.We purchased two adult tickets and a childrens ticket which came to £57.75 ish, (a family ticket cost £58.80 ish.)These were all event tickets for all of the attractions, single events can be purchased as per the sites web page. The ticket lasts for 12 months which is great value because we can visit as many times as we like within this time; good job really because we simply didn't have enough time to do it all, and we allowed 1 1/2 days, thinking this was ample time. The site opens at 10 am, in my opinion this could do with being 9 am; last admission is around 4 pm in winter, which i would say is about right. The staff are friendly and approachable and in many cases are ex Royal navy so you can be confident that what they say is spot on.HMS Warrior was a joy to walk around, the staff eager to demonstrate the workings of the ship and discuss its complexity and role while in service.HMS Victory was also a joy to see; at the time of writing this she is undergoing a major refit of her masts and sales so her visit was by a guided tour that was both full of facts and humour, just mind your head on this one and hope you like steep stairs. The Mary rose is the jewel in the crown however, we spent almost 6 hours in this museum over two days, the efforts made to preserve this almost 500 year old war ship are extraordinary and best left to the approachable guides, some if which are in Tudor costume, to explain. In October this year this exhibit will close until April next year due to some exciting alterations; as if wasn't good enough already, its going to be better! We also took a tour of the harbour, which was spoilt by 57 rude, disrespectful French students who would not stop talking throughout the trip, and made it difficult if not impossible to hear the commentary.Even the staff had to threaten them with being put ashore if they didnt be quite, but this had little effect. We were offeted a chance to go around again by way of an apology from the crew which was over and above what we expected, however due to our appointed guided tour of Victory, we were unable to except this kind offer. In short we intend to return later in the year to complete our visit and look firward to this very much.
A great place to visit. We went to the Mary Rose museum, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, and really enjoyed all of them. Very friendly staff too. Certainly recommended.
