We were pleasantly surprised at how spectacular the falls are. There are actually several falls coming down in close proximity after a short, easy walk from the parking area. The parking area is small so it could be full on busy days. We took the short hike up and over the falls and got to see some interesting limestone caves (none were very big), interpretive signs and beautiful scenery. Take a flashlight for the caves by the way. Entrance is worth the $7 fee, and the pass is good for 24 hours at any State Park.
My wife and I came to Rifle to getaway to a quiet, peaceful place for the weekend. It is seriously a photographer's dream. We took so many pictures. It is a very short walk to the actual falls itself and then they have caves all along the falls that you can walk in. There are trails all around. It is definately a must see!
This is place is a little piece of heaven!!!!! We love going here and hiking around, playing in the water, having a picnic!
Kicking ourselves for not visiting Rifle Falls the last time we stayed in Rifle Co a couple years ago. Totally worth the short drive. I was expecting to have to hike a bit, but the falls are very close to the parking lot. They're very pretty and not busy if you go early. We also went on Sunday evening and it was busy, so morning was best for us. If we get back to the West side of Colorado, we'll definitely visit again.
I spent a few hours this afternoon at the Rifle Falls State Park. This park is a camping area and is fairly small. The Falls are really very beautiful and it is popular with young families. There are spots to camp, BBQ and Picnic. We were fishing for trout today- gorgeous water and you can see lots of fish but we were skunked - all the fishermen left the same way. This is a great spot for an hour or so and the Falls are nice. Being a Canadian and having Niagara Falls in my back yard it is hard to compare Rifle- but it is worth a visit if you are in the area.
Today I drove out to Rifle Falls, Rifle, Colorado. It is located on the western slope of Colorado. Turn off I-70 at Rifle (north) on Hwy 13 and follow the signs. You will make a right turn off Hwy 13 and go approximately 11 miles on a country 2 lane road. This trip is quite beautiful itself. The falls are located in Rifle State Park (entry fee). Park just inside the park and walk approximately 1 to 2 blocks to the falls. They are quite beautiful with snow all around them. You can drive up the road about 1 mile to the "Raparian" area. There is a parking area. Here a stream falls over rocks from higher up and then continues to the falls. There is a small bridge to cross the stream and you can walk around this beautiful area (no fee)
Interesting feature for Rifle, well worth the drive north of town. The falls have several spills and you can walk under the falls, too. Look it's the back side of water!
I go to Rifle Falls quite a bit...It is unique and quite beautiful! On this particular trip, I brought my parents who were in their 80's. Though they have traveled a lot in their lifetime, they would never be up to a huge hike...Rifle Falls was a perfect choice - on a paved path, less than 1/4 mile away! The area is quite beautiful and the falls, themselves, beautiful! Earlier in the summer I was with more capable hikers - and we went to the caves at the top of the falls...Very worthwhile! I would also recommend visiting the Fish Hatchery and the Calypso Falls further down the road from the State Park.....note: there is no fee for the falls, but you will have to purchase a Colorado State Park pass to get to the trailhead.
This was beautiful and very enjoyable because we walked around the falls and above them stopping to explore the caves and to check out the view from different angles. It was the perfect time of year to enjoy the area.
Going in Sept has its advantages, most everyone is your age, fewer people at attractions. No lines for the bathrooms and plenty of parking spaces. We were the only ones here on our visit, it was a lovely day, Since it had rained recently the falls were flowing and splashing.Just a lovely place to set and reflect or eat lunch.
