I am a frequent visitor to the aquarium, and as usual my experience this time was pleasant as always. It's probably not fair to call it just an aquarium, because there are bats and monkeys to see also to name a few. My children particularly enjoyed the outdoor Sea Lion show. The only down-falls are it is a little pricey for admission, and parking is terrible in that it's off-premise (and there is a fee). Besides those short comings that I've come to expect, it really is a fun and informative destination . I took the "behind the scenes" tour which showed some of the technical elements of the exhibits. Not too interesting for the younger ones, but I found it interesting. It's expensive, but a lot of fun!
We took our 7 year-old grandson here, and had a very nice time. The exhibits are beautiful, there are lots of different species of fish to see, and there are lots of really big fish in the shark tank. The sea lion show is cute, and they have penguins, turtles, monkeys, butterflies and birds also. The butterflies fly all around you as you walk through, and you can buy bird seed to feed the birds. My grandson had 2 birds sitting on his hand eating, which was pretty thrilling for him. There are several touch tanks, where you can touch stingrays, starfish, and other creatures.
We've been members of the aquarium for a few years now. My son and daughter, 11 and 10, still love staying at the Hyatt Place next door, and spending a few hours at the aquarium. Feeding the exotic birds in the aviary is always an adventure. We buy seeds and get to the aviary shortly after they open in the morning. This way the birds are hungry and will land on you right away. It's always fun to see how many birds you can get to sit on you at once!Feeding the sting rays is always fun, too. I can't believe how friendly they are as they swim up to get fish from you. They are like little puppies, all clamoring for attention. The staff and volunteers are always pleasant, and the fish in the aquariums look very healthy. It's a very nicely maintained aquarium that is great for families with little kids.
I came here yesterday with my boyfriend. This place is too overpriced. A lot of things were closed and we barely got to see anything. We only got to see a few sharks, sea lion, otter, penguin, and a few fish. We wanted to see the octopus and the tank was empty. We also wanted to see the monkeys that they were supposed to have and they weren't there as well. The only good thing about this place was being able to pet the stingrays. Some people were feeding them but that was an extra fee. Even to feed the birds was an extra fee as well. This place shouldn't be charging extra for these things since this place is so overpriced already.
So much to see and do at the Riverhead Aquarium! Kids thoroughly enjoyed touching, feeding and being close to the animals. The shows run throughout the day so plenty of opportunity to take part in everything. Truly something for everyone.
beautiful aquarium. The exhibits are excellent. indoor and outdoor exhibits. sealion show was fun. have a lot of interactive things todo!
Others have identified the varied wildlife. Only drawbacks are its location (towards the east end) , parking, which is usually a couple of blocks away, and the pricing, which is a tad toward the expensive side for an aquarium which is one of the smaller ones we have visited. (Coney Island, NY, Vancouver, BC, Camden, NJ, Boston, MA, Inner Harbor, MD, etc.) However the exhibits are accessible and well thought out in terms of presentation. Especially good for kids with some interactive displays as well.
Aquariums are suppose to be for the fish but this aquarium has a few extra things that make it cool. Great seal show, butterfly exhibit and they even have monkeys! Check online for coupons before you go. It can get a little pricey
Nice aquarium but at $26 per person it was expensive entertainment for the hour we were there. They also have a butterfly exhibit that you walk thru and the butterflies fly around you.
We go here every year, its a fun place to visit. I think its worth the money, something interesting to do for a couple of hours. Also it nice to do the boat ride, we learned a lot.
