Great big volcanic crater in the most desolate, empty landscape I can remember. Very scenic in the winter.
I loved this little crater. The color is surprisingly blue and it s gorgeous on a sunny day the earth around is red and green. It reminded me of a mini Crater Lake, like in Oregon.
We visited in February when it was cold, snowy and very windy. It's well worth a visit, it was iced over when we was there but look absolutely stunning. Would love to go back in the summer.
Quite picturesque crater which is worth stopping off for a few minutes. Not much else to do other than take a few pictures.
Right next to the main road north from Selfoss. We visited on a cold day in the blizzard but still got amazing views and stunning photos.
This site is amazing, I'm not sure what i was expecting but the view was well worth the visit. It was a very cold February day with snow and ice and you have to be careful as there is nothing to stop you falling down the slope but the crater is huge and there is red volcanic rock all around the outside. Not far from the town of Selfoss and easy to reach. There is a small fee but noone was there to take money when we went and it was just open to everyone.
Its was first day , when I arrival on Iceland, me and my friend was visiting Kerid Krater, nice view, and nice colours.Visit 2008 November month
I enjoyed walking the rim of this crater which you can easily and safely do even in winter. From the side farthest from the parking lot you can look out over a forested area so as you make the circle you get a lot of different views of the area. When we were there no one was working the booth but I do think a donation is expected when visiting.
A group of us visited here during March and the area was entirely covered in snow, as expected. The geographical element of the location was really interesting but admittedly there was very little to see during the Winter weather. Would definitely like to go back in the warmer months to see it in its full glory. There is a charge for this, it is a nominal fee but is different to a lot of others places we had visited.
Geologically very interesting, but harder to explore in winter and not as obvious as lake inside crater frozen and covered in snow. Come spring lovely spot for picnic lunch.
