The locals here are so friendly and relaxed. After a walk around town and topping up with some great mastica products, we stopped for delicious ice cream at Dodoni (they even had pomegranate and mastica ice cream) and enjoyed the views across the 'bottomless' lake. From there we spotted a hill up to the right where you can get some lovely photos from above the lake, over the treetops and out to sea. It was a short but steep trek and well worth the effort. The surrounding area was lovely with a few public beaches dotted around and lots of lovely cafes and tavernas. Well worth a visit.
This is a small bay with a few restaurants and bars, with the usual invitations to eat at each one. It's a pretty little place but from the previous reviews I was expecting something larger with areas to walk (not just 0.5 km around the perimeter). More a pond than a lake!
Nice view and nothing more. Hard to find a place to park in the surroundings, and it doesn't worth more than 30 minutes of your time.
Not worth to go to Agios Nikolaos just for the lake. But if you happen to travel around, you might find it interesting.
Unlike what other people have posted, I find the place to be very tourist friendly. No beggars, no thieves, very clean and romantic. Basically, people from Greece (Crete at least) are very friendly. We ate here several times and each time, we were satisfied with the food, service and the waiters always, as in always chat with you to ask how you are and some even share life story. Note though, many establishments are closed for the winter which starts around October. So by November probably 90% of them will be already closed and will just reopen by February.
I have been there many times and I will go again. It is so beautiful place, one of the best in Crete. If you visit Agios Nikolaos you must visit this place.Drinking or eating around the lake is very nice too.
The lake is at the center of the town, with love cafes and shopping areas all around. It is a must visit area in town. One can choose from a large variety of cafes to have drinks or grab a bite. The streets around the lake a very pretty and fun to just walk about.
We sat by the lake and drank our Mythos and people watched. It's quite a busy area, but very close to the main shopping area.
After sunset comes night. Is the fun about to end? No way!Greek nightlife is renowned for music, dancing, alcohol and great food. Greek nightlife lasts till dawn. You definitely don’t want to miss out.
Surrounded by restaurants it is a pleasant place to pass the time people watching. In one corner there is a plaza.
