this is another must see if you are in Death Valley. Absolutely stunning! It is very windy out by the rim so be prepared. Be sure to take some time and follow the path up the side as there are smaller craters that you can see. Unfortunately my tour did not give us enough time to do it but it is still a great visit. The crater was formed by volcanic action when the molten rock met up with some underground water and blew!! Fascinating!!
I don't think many people visiting Death Valley go to Ubhebe Crater, they look at a hole in the ground and think,"OK, it's a crater." I understand that but to do so would be to miss out on an incredible place. While it's beautiful to look at, it's a lot of fun to walk around the area. The contrast between the different levels is interesting but to me the main attraction is the sky: The clouds, the sun, the night sky in particular. If you ever wanted to see, really see the Milky Way, this is a fantastic spot to do it from. Depending on the time of year, you can see the whole sky lit up and glowing. It's a certified "dark spot" where there's no light pollution, which is rare these days. It's out of the way and a bit of a drive, but it's worth a visit, both day and night.
A little out of the way but Scotty's Castle is a few miles away so do both at the same time. The view from the top is awesome but many people also walk down to the bottom.
The enormity of this crater blew me away. Powerful winds almost did as well. Never expected to see such an awesome sight in Death Valley.
Easy to get to, paved road and parking area and finally, a really cool photographic opportunity awaits you at the Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley. Located only a few miles from Scotty's Castle, the crater is not all that wide, but fairly deep and taking both of those aspects into consideration, the entire crater can be photographed easily with one shot, depending on the angle, of which there are many. When we were there, in the early afternoon, the wind had kicked up pretty good, enough to blow any hat you might be wearing a long ways away, so be prepared for that. If you're up for a good work out, take the hike to the bottom, but be sure and take water with you. This hike is steep, so be prepared for that as well. At a minimum, you've got to see this!
We felt like we were standing on the moon. Its a very surreal experience. There are no fences to prevent someone from falling in, so be careful with small children.
Easy to get to overlook, very beautiful. You can walk all the way around the rim, or take the steep trail to the bottom.
This is a very easy site to get to and is very beautiful. Totally takes you by surprise. Very nice!!
Great hike to the bottom, not so great coming back. Go during evening for good light, (photos). Excellent trail around rim of crater.
Cinder cone in the desert. Amazing, and very high with walk around the rim. No rails and a little scary.
