The first place to visit is the Visitor Center. Friendly and informative staff. Loads of information on things to do.
Smithfield is a pleasant surprise. Start at the Visitor Center. They have brochures on the town. One of the brochures includes a walking tour that details the Victorian houses that line the streets. You can also hit the restrooms here before you set out (although, there are public restrooms in the town).
We stopped by the visitors center on our way into Smithfield for a 2 day visit. A very informative gentleman gave us a tour map and a quick recap of what to visit while in the area, lots of shops and restaurants. If you are spending time in Smithfield we strongly suggest that you stop by before starting your tour or shopping adventure.
Everyone bent over backwards to be helpful to us in this lovely little town. They are proud of it, and should be.
The staff as well as the rooms with the artists work is absolutely a must when you visit Smithfield.Make sure you start your tour there, and don't forget to ask about Darden's Country Store. It is a short distance outside of Smithfield and the owners, Tom and Dee Dee are wonderful. We purchased our hams/bacon & sausage from their store, it was the best ham we tasted on our visit and the best price. Not to salty and they were the highlight of our trip.
The visitors center is a little difficult to find for there is nothing that really pops out to attract you, but once inside the staff is very helpful sharing history of the town and local attractions, they even recommend restaurants
This should be the first place you stop when visiting Smithfield, Va for the first time. The knowledgeable staff can ansewer just about any question you have about the area and provide you with directions, maps and brochures and even a discount coupon for some of the merchants. They will tell you what is going on and help you decide what to see if you are on a limited time schedule. Very friendly folks offering great advice. You can't get more down home than that.
You typically think a visitor center as chocked full of brochures and kind of dull .... well not this one! Excited docents with cool information on local attractions and it is combined with an arts studio with working artists, paintings and jewelry for sale. The building is inviting and an absolutely wonderful. Cool place. Must stop by when visiting Smithfield.
We stopped at the Visitor's Center and picked up the walking tour guide for the historic district. The map was easy to follow and the houses were well maintained. The museum and courthouse provided more information about the town. The courthouse had a volunteer guide that was very knowledgeable.
The gentleman we spoke to was very pleasant. Not only was he informative on all the places to see and visit, he also took a personal interest, asking me and my fiance` what brought us to the area. Turns out, he even knew my relatives that live there that we were visiting.
