We had time to spare so we decided to take a drive. Did some trail hikes. It's a very short ride from town an there are several trails which lead you to the falls. The waterfalls are awesome.
If you are visiting the Black Hills, I highly recommend you drive through Spearfish Canyon. It is absolutely stunning with some short hikes that you can do. We did the Roughlock falls hike - it's very short and waterfall is beautiful. This is where the scene from Dancing of the wolves movie was shot. We visited at the very beginning of September 2014 and there were hardly any people there. A good place to escape the crowds. We stopped here on our way to Deadwood. Allow 2-3 hours.
The visit was during a very warm spell in November making it very pleasant to walk around exploring nature. The roads were freshly sanded making it an easy drive. The frozen waterfalls drew me in as did walking through the dry river beds. The time spent was quiet and peaceful, a perfect Sunday morning with nature.
One of the outstanding drives in America! Take the time and spend half a day. Every turn was something new and exciting and the vistas were great. Well worth the time!
I get through Spearfish, Deadwood and the area two or three times a year. I had some time to take this drive during the winter on the way up to Spearfish Canyon Lodge. A creek runs along the road and there are water falls to see right from the side of the road. It is not far off the beaten path and has unique scenery one wouldn't think were in the area. This is a great road for a cyclist. If you have time take a detour and enjoy the ride.
They were not helpful at all-wanted to have my wedding there and had to call n email 5 times for someone to call me back. Not worth the hassle opposite of what wedding should feel like. Extremely disappointed
We spent 3 nights at the Wickiup Village aka Spearfish Creek Cabins about 5 years ago. Beautiful country and great accommodations. We liked it so much, that we're holding our family reunion here in July 2015. There's no place like the Black Hills - and this is a terrific home base - 2, 4, and 6 people cabins, a play area, covered pavilion for gathering/eating, and a big fire pit - not to mention that Spearfish Creek runs right beside you!
The road down the canyon is twisty, turny and full of little visual surprises. Following the creek was fun after a long day of driving on the flat parts of Dakotas. The canyon is a lovely respite and a wonderful drive. There are several places to pull over and stroll a bit. No traffic during our visit. Its a lovely part of the world.
Spearfish Canyon drive is an easy and lovely trip near Deadwood, SD. The canyon is striking and historical, having been the site of a dam that provided hydroelectricity for the gold mines in nearby Lead. An easy trip that takes only a couple of hours from either Deadwood or Lead.
The Spearfish canyon changes dramatically with each season change. My husband and I like to take a drive up at least once a month. There are many hiking trails, and fishing spots, as well as some great climbing and in the winter you can ice climb Bridal Veil Falls. Really beautiful.
