Why would one walk through a very narrow tunnel? Well, to get to the other side. This tunnel is very narrow and you will be walking right next to the single line of cars and small trucks that can go through. Everyone does it, so did we. The bay and shops on the other side are interesting.
This tunnel was excavated in order to allow animal transport to travel direct from one side of the hill to the other instead of having to trek to the top and skid down the other side. There must have been finncial reasons as well when this was built before the days of animal rights
Great historical tunnel. Great to see the old town walking around the downtown area and through the tunnel to the warf.
It's a tunnel, it just lies there and does it's thing. Keep right if walking towards the Carenage and left if walking to town. Inhale the fumes if you've had too much fresh air lately.
You can pass the Sendall Tunnel from Cruise Ship Terminal to the harbour. It is a little dangerous for pedestrians, as you have to walk on the street. A strange feeling, if the cars nearly touch you... It is nice to see one time, but it was even not worth to take a picture. It is noisy and do not expect to breeze fresh air.
The Sendall Tunnel is located in an area recognised to be replete with national history. This tunnel is critical both to pedestrian and motor traffic.
Use caution cars pass closely. This tunnel takes you to the Carenage. Pass this way to walk to Grand Anse beach.
We first drove through the tunnel on our way to St. George's. As we explored the city we found ourselves back at the tunnel. It is a marvel that this centuries old structure is so heavily used by both car and pedestrian. People filed neatly down the left side(with vehicle traffic flow to your right) Felt very safe while in the tunnel
My wife and I decided to walk through this tunnel and when we came upon it we both looked at each other and laughed. We had never been through a tunnel, on foot, shared by cars, just inches away from you. I guess for the locals this is just one part of their everyday journey but for us it was a unique experience. The cars tend to drive sensibly through the tunnel and if you walk in a single file then it is relatively safe but it is funny being so close to oncoming traffic! The health and safety brigade would undoubtedly not allow this in England, so give it a go it's not a long tunnel :)
A real working historical relic that links the Carenage to the market area and is constantly busy, certainly saves a hike over the ridge, one way traffic makes walking along the side safe as long as you take basic care, short enough not to need a light.
