This is fun and informative. Our first visit was in March, and recently returned last week (7/22). They are growing and have so much to offer. Very fun and informative. A must see.
Visited Lyon on Thursday and found a sign on the door stating batch #035 will be ready on Friday 12:30pm. Friday came and my wife and I were waiting outside. Jamie opened the door at about 12:15 or so and asked us if we would like to come in and sample a previous batch. We sampled what turned out to be awesome rum. Jamie then told us Ben was in the back getting ready to start bottling the new batch. She is very passionate about what her and Ben are doing and we very much enjoyed the sampling and education of how the process works. We purchased two bottles of the dark rum from batch #035 which was still warm at the time. How cool is that! Keep up the good work and we will be back for more in the future...
We had the best time at Lyon's. For one, the owner, Jamie and her sister who runs the front desk are very personable! They gave us great information about their rums and we were able to taste them. All delicious...especially the dark rum. The tour was great as well. Definitely stop by!
The distillery is a bit out of the way and signage is lacking. The distillery is behind the winery in a separate building. It is easy to miss...which is unfortunate because the area is really neat. There is not much to see when you go in (unless you show up during the weekend, in which case they have tours)...but the rum (both the white and dark) is really good!
Hipsters and just cool people who appreciate craft beers or small batch rums and liquor rejoice on your weekend getaway. This is your kinda place. We samples several things and bought a few things to take home -- which were gone instantly. Glad we stopped in during our last visit!
We day tripped to St. Michaels from DC after reading about the new rum distillery in the Washington Post, and were pleasantly surprised to find the drive fairly short (just under 2 hours) and very relaxing. The distillery is situated in what everyone refers to as the "booze trifecta" (positioned behind a small winery & brewery) in an old flour mill. We were able to try 3 types of rum: white, dark and aged, as well as a 100 proof corn whiskey (moonshine, but better...and legal). We also got to take an informal tour of the production area where everything goes down. The stills were running, and we learned that these are the first (legal) stills to operate in Maryland in over 40 years. They also answered the questions we had about how distilleries work and what "craft" means in light of recent articles about the validity of "craft" spirits. It was great to meet the actual distiller (Ben Lyon, hence Lyon Distilling) and look behind the scenes to know that they really do everything they say they do, from start to finish, or "grain to glass" as the saying goes. Plus, the spirits are really phenomenal. I recommend buying an extra bottle, as we are already planning a trip back because it's our new favorite and you can't buy it anywhere else. Looking forward to their rye whiskey (aging in barrels at the moment) and really anything else they end up producing - the passion, knowledge and excitement from these guys was simply great.
Great start up business. The Lyon Distillery makes light and dark rum and corn whisky. It is a small operation but they are living the American dream and the rum is great.
The distillery is a basic pot still distillery with 3 small stills making small batches of product. They were distilling rum when we visited. This place is an interesting place to visit to get a basic understanding of the distilling and aging process.
Husband & wife team who are very enthusiastic and passionate about their business. They offer a free tasting of their products and also offer tours of the distillery. Extremely friendly and welcoming place to visit.
My husband and I have been to Saint Michaels 3 times in the last 6 months and every time we make sure we stop into Lyon Distilling to stock up on rum. Every visit has been great and the liquor is absolutely fantastic!! Lyon Distilling is definitely a hidden gem off of main street and a must see if you are in town.
