great place to visit close Sulmona , old place with tiny lovely street and great castle.. ...............
Only 10 minutes drive from Sulmona this is a very picturesque place. There is a castle - not normally open and a few places to eat and drink.Set in the mountains and definitely worth a trip.
This village is near Sulmona and worth a visit as it has interesting little streets to walk up and down. Please note it is on a steep hill. There are some very nice photo opportunitites.Try and find the rock carver as he has some interesting things to sell.
We took the short trip from Sulmona to Pacentro on a Sunday afternoon during the rest period, so we didn't get the chance to experience any of the shops or restaurants. But just walking the streets of the town and talking to some of the older gentlemen sitting in the park was enough to delight us. The way the town is set into the hillside is a sight to behold.
Breathtaking views, worth a trip to explore. It's only 8kms from Sulmona, the people are friendly and more than happy to tell you their life story.
We bought picnic items at the market in Sulmona and drove up the mountain to above the castle in Pacentro where we had our lunch and admired the view. Then we enjoyed a walk around the village. Well worth the drive up.
Nestled below the mountains this terraced town is totally unspoilt by tourists, lots of little alley's and tucked away small shops. Not great access due to steep steps everywhere, but the many very old local people manage to get around no bother... Not too sure we should put this review in here as too many people would spoil the place.
At the outset, let me say that I'm not sure why Pacentro is mentioned as an attraction for Sulmona. Pacentro is a town about 15 min from Sulmona, and it has its own attractions. That said, it is worth the drive to spend a morning or afternoon there. It is the home of Madonna's (The American singer) ancestors.
Probably doesn't require more than a few hours although we were there for longer. Off the tourist trail which is short and flat, is a rabbit warren of stairs and alleys that can be exhausting in the heat.Under the arch where the bus stops is a spectacularly good, well known, expensive restaurant the name of which I have forgotten. I daresay it is the ONLY place open on most days!Nothing happens from 1pm until 5pm. If it is hot, there is nowhere to hide! Nice views of course.
Pacentro is an exceptionally beautiful little medieval town in the Maiella National Park in Abruzzo. It is just impossible not to fall in love with it and want to keep returning. The view from Pacentro over the Peligna Valley to the mountains is breathtaking.
