If you stumble upon a sunny day, it is a nice place to sit down on the grass and take in the views, relax. Do not recommend if the weather is bad as there is not a lot of benches. Also best public toilets available in Salisbury
Salisbury's Cathedral Close is a much more extensive surrounding area than is found at most other English cathedrals. Fine examples of all periods of architecture make it well worth walking round its outer roadway. One can only envy the fortunate people who have lived there (like the late prime minister, Edward Heath), and those who still do. Notice the two big timber gates in the archways from the adjacent city centre, that are closed after curfew time at night. Pause to look at the two fine 20th-century women sculptures, one (by Elizabeth Frink) walking away from the West end of the cathedral, the other (by Lynn Chadwick) heading towards it, cloak flying out behind. On a sunny spring day this must be one of the finest places to be in Britain.
My parents live less than half a mile from the cathedral close and it's one of my favourite places. Salisbury cathedral is arguably one of the world's greatest buildings but a significant contribution to WHY it's so amazing is the setting in the Close. Packed with beautiful old historic buildings including two museums and the National Trust Mompesson House and Ted Heath's old home Arundels, there's lots to see.As a teenager working in a city centre shop I had my sandwich lunch in the Close every day. I cannot get enough of this place.
Very quiet green with some lovely houses and close to museums and the impressive cathedral. Worth wandering around.
The close is lovely to walk around or for a picnic. Sitting in the shade of a tree with the tallest spire in England looming above. You can visit the cloisters where you can see the Magna Carter for FREE in the cathedral museum.
I love to walk around The Close......... it's like a quite village in the middle of a busy city..........
Very close to Salisbury Cathedral. I accessed the close through the archway near the Lazy Cow hotel. It's a lovely green area with interesting period houses.
Delightful, peaceful area full of interesting historic houses & museums in the area surrounding the Cathedral. Not to be missed on a visit to Salisbury, make sure you leave enough time - could spend a whole day or two in The Close, but beware as some venues need to be booked in advance. Look them up individually as some are closed during the winter months - and also on some days of the week - so do check carefully.
I have lived in Salisbury since 1997, still enjoy the peace and beauty of the close, many attractions, open gardens in the summer, museum, cathedral, ghost story tour, but mostly the buildings, sculpture and open grass space, can be enjoyed by anyone.
There are lot of things to visit in the close, such as Museum and National Trust houses, not to mention the Salisbury Cathedral. A brilliant day for the family
