Beautifully preserved area with a lot of history. Museum was closed but still made for fabulous views and plenty of signage around to keep you informed! Mild level of fitness to climb the hill up, but well worth it. There is a sealed road for cars to access.
WOW !!! - What a great place to visit.. The history is very intresting, just stunning views.. The tour of Green Fort Hill was included in a 10 Day Fly/Drive Cape York Safari, with Frontier Safari / Australian Wild Escapes.. This was a really good first day of the holiday, unfortunately the rest of the safari was not so good.. The 4wd Vehicle broke down twice within the first few days, so we spent 4 nights at Seisia Holiday Park (see review) .. The vehicle could not be repaired so our "Holiday of a Lifetime" ended.. We all flew back to Cairns and spent 5 nights in a hotel.. So far we have not received a refund from Frontier Safari / Australian Wild Escapes on the missed part of the safari..I would recommend a visit to Green Fort Hill, well worth it..
I went to Green Hill Fort as part of a guided tour of Thursday Island. It was the highlight of the tour and I'd like to have spent more time there. The views are excellent and the historical displays are amazing for such an isolated place. Definitely recommend this spot to anyone visiting Thursday Island.
Just a short walk from anywhere on the island, it's well worth a visit to take in the views. If you have a smartphone with panorama capability, you will be rewarded. Also some good history on placards to read about, but I think more could be provided. I didn't do a tour.
This late 18th century fort is in good condition. It still has the original 6inch guns (Sydney's have all been taken off their mountings). The underground museum is full of interesting history. The view from the hill to the surrounding islands is excellent and the sea colour amazing.
The walk up to Green Fort Hill is well worth it for the wonderful views; I only went early morning or late afternoon for the sunset - would be too hot during the day.
Historic Site well worth a look around, museum was closed during our visit but if you have the time, get up & have a look, great vistas of the surrounding Islands as well
The fort provides views over the town of Thursday Island, to the surrounding islands encircled by the beautiful waters of Torres Strait. The gun emplacements are still there and the magazines below have been converted to a very interesting museum. Bring your camera and drinks as there is no shop on site. We visited as part of a town tour, otherwise it is a walk up the hill to the fort from the town.
Anyone visiting Thursday Island has to go to Green Hill Fort, not only to see the fort itself and the historical museum but also to see the wonderful views of the surrounding islands, reefs and ocean. Take some water with you as it gets very hot.
Fantastic views, interesting history, easy access with car. Great spot for picnic. Sunset views spectacular.
