The boardwalk is excellent, and take your camera and binoculars as there are plenty of photo opportunities, from birds to scenery to the occasional kangaroo.
This boardwalk is at the small seaside town of Urunga, about 500 km north of Sydney, easily accessible from the highway. It is in good condition, for walking, and is fenced, so safe for small children, properly supervised, of course. The walk skirts the estuary, on one side, and some mangroves or dunes, on the other, and ends at the river mouth, from where you can walk the beach as far as you like, to the south. We saw lots of fish and crabs, and a sacred kingfisher flitting about. North Coast beaches must be the best anywhere, for walking, any time except top high tide, as the sand is fine and firm. The boardwalk is about one kilometre long, and the scenery is always different coming back. Or if you wish, walk about 2 km down to beach, find some steps and walk back along the road behind the beach, but you'll miss out, then, on the great mountain views of the return walk. The river mouth is interesting, as it was a port for small ships about 100 years ago, all well explained in informative signs. All in all, a highly recommended activity for an hour or two.
If you enjoy walking, water, wildlife and scenery this is the best. You can walk while fish, stingrays, jellyfish and crabs go about there business below and many kinds of birds can be spotted around you. There are many places to sit and rest and you reach the beach after nearly 2km. The veiws of the mountains and the town coming back are great. Even the kids love it and enjoy the exercise.
Such a beautiful relaxing walk for all ages and fitness levels. Walk along the boardwalk through the mangroves, sit and watch crabs and fish swim by, rock fisherman, whales splashing or the waves rolling in on the beach. Such a well planned and popular walk .
Love it! Plenty of opportunity to see wildlife as you enjoy the easy stroll to the river entrance. Places to sit along the way - so bring a thermos or drink and take the time to enjoy :-)
We walked out here twice on our stay with my parents who have recently moved to Urunga. It is about a 1km long each way, and you can stop and look at lots of things (e.g. crabs, fish swimming, fisherman. At the end of the boardwalk is the beach - we seen whales and dolphins swimming about 150m out. Just beautiful!
Had breakfast there both mornings, food excellent Coffee great & service friendly..Good place to sit and plan the rest of your day.
1km boardwalk from the Lagoon to the Beach. Plenty of wildlife, water birds and plants to view. After your walk go for the swim at the beach or have refreshing dip in the lagoon. Great sunrise & sunset views from the boardwalk.
Get off the highway and get into Urunga. Take a walk to the end of the boardwalk and you won't regret the decision.
If you are looking for a break on the long drive fron Sydney to Brisbane call in at Urunga and stretch your legs on this 1km board walk. Park in the car park in front of the pub and head out to where the river meets the sea. Plenty to see for all ages. Lots of small fish and crabs to spot for the kids and great exercise for the driver.
