We loved the lighthouse, but wish we could have entered the grounds to get closer pictures. The walk back to the lighthouse is a pleasure. The day we were there, most of the houses had caretakers out tending to the yards and gardens; such a beautiful area!
Typical New England Lighthouse to visit. Most interesting is the walk to the lighthouse. The homes are spectacular as is the view. One will look back in time and imagine all of the parties and summer barbeques at these homes overlooking the ocean and the lighthouse.
Visited with friends, quiet location to enjoy and see the ocean - try to stop here every time in WH. Was a sunny and windy December day but the beauty peace and quiet out weighted the cold, Worth a visit!
Great lighthouse if you are into them like me. Road does say private drive, but while we were there many people drove down to it and were fishing or picnicking, so I believe the signs are to scare you away, or apply to peak season.Taylor Swift does live nearby, but it seemed just her parents were in town so I didn't experience anything being shut down.Definitely worth a visit if in Westerly.
One thing that I didn't like is that the parking was very sparse. But the views were breath taking! Just looking out at the look out point was breath taking! But I wasn't comfortable because it seemed it was for an upper class of people (Mercedes and Land Rovers)and I come with my Honda CR-V.
The day we visited access to the lighthouse was closed and two signs that stated it is a private residence. A little disappointed but understood the privacy aspect. The walk up to the lighthouse was nice and refreshing we could smell and feel the ocean breeze. We met some nice people coming and going and we stayed awhile looking at the waves. We also suggested the walk to another couple we met on a bench while eating ice cream. yum
There are no signs pointing you in the direction of the lighthouse, and none of the locals seem to know anything about it either. If you drive all the way through the little town shop area and up the hill, there is a walkway. Disabled and 65+ may drive to the lighthouse, but others must park on the road there and walk. Overall, it was a typical New England lighthouse, but you could walk to it and the view is incredible. Well worth the walk, and it wouldn't be a long walk if you go to the right place the first time.
During peak season you can only walk in as vehicles are not allowed unless you are a senior citizen or handicapped. The access road is very tight and you need to be patient with your fellow vehicles maneuvering in and out. I am fortunate to visit during all times of the year and it's beauty changes with the seasons, go enjoy.
This light house on the beach at Watch Hill is an easy walk and very popular. It is really hard for me to say more about this place as I didn't go inside it. It was a quite crowded area the day we visited on a Saturday morning in August 2013
- large parking lot - the signs at the top of the road sounded like it restricted driving to residents of the neighborhood, so we parked in town and walked down through the neighborhood to the lighthouse but found many people had driven down- the lighthouse property is occupied by the Coast Guard. You can go up to the lighthouse but not inside- the beach is made of large rocks. You can go out on it. Many people have made little towers by stacking stones. Kind of cool to see.
