My husband and I decided to take our youngest son on a day trip to get out of the house. We chose Wurzburg Palace because it's not too far from where we live. I didn't know anything about it before we went, except that Tiepolo had painted a fresco there. Having had to contend with parking woes around Europe, I really appreciated the parking right out front. The palace itself is an impressive structure but the wrought iron work on the gates and on the palace itself were really beautiful. The modest entrance fee included a tour in English....score! Our tour guide (I don't remember his name), was very pleasant and had a great sense of humor. I especially liked how he explained the fresco, even our 8 year old was entertained. And the fresco.....gorgeous! More modern in style than many I've seen, but no less impressive. The tour only included some of the rooms, and although I enjoyed them all, the mirrored room was my favorite. However, we were set free to wander other rooms after the tour. I was impressed with the number of rooms that we got to see on this tour, in particular for the inexpensive price of entry. The thing I was most excited for though, were the gardens. Even in the dead of winter they are quite lovely. You can easily imagine how grand they must be when in bloom. The walking paths (or running, if you're 8) kept us engaged in the scenery. We had hoped to eat the cafe on site, but it was closed for renovation. We'll be going back this summer to see the gardens in their full glory.
I have heard about the fresco by Tiepolo in the Residenz for many years, and I finally made it to Wurzburg to see it! That fresco itself was worth the visit. The rest of the Residenz was interesting too, although I have seen more elaborate mansions and palaces in Germany. The rest of the town of Wurzburg, despite the snow storm, was definitiely worth visiting. I must go back when it is NOT snowing! Oh, the chapel on the side was breath-taking! Baroque rococo on steroid!! I am not sure if I can worship in a place like that! But oh my, what a sight!!
When you visit The Residenz in Wurzburg, make sure you use the guided tour scheduled everyday in the beautiful palace (it's included in the ticket price anyway - with or without the guided tour). With the guided tour, you could see more rooms and of course knowing the histories behind the decorations, the rooms and all pomposity it comes with it! I followed the English language guided tour and I must say, I was well impressed! She was very good! p/s unfortunately you are not allowed to take photos inside the palace even without the flash!
As Napoleon said 'tongue in cheek,' - "the nicest parsonage in Europe."The famous architect Balthasar Neumann combined the baroque style of several European countries and came up with this little number. It took 24 years to build and was completed in 1744. An air-raid in 1945 seriously damaged the building, and it took until 1987 to restore the damage. The face of the building is 167 meters long, and contains a mere 400 rooms. Apart from the staircase, the 4 main room you simply must visit are the Chapel, the White Hall, the Audience Room and the Imperial Hall. The garden is not bad too!I caught the train from Frankfurt, about a 20 minute trip; a wander through the Wurzburg markets, and around the corner and there it is - in all its huge Glory! It does not get much bigger than this.Brian, from Perth W. Australia.
If you are in Würzburg you definitely need to visit. If you're going to be spending more time in Bavaria the Residenz is covered by the Bavaria Ticket (24 euro for an individual, 44 euro for family/partner). The Bavaria Ticket is good for 14 days and covers other places like Neuschwanstein and considering entrance to the Residenz for one person alone is 7.50 euro it is a pretty good deal. The guided tour is free and we felt pretty good. You will get to see more rooms on the guided tour than if you just go by yourself, but they are different rooms. One wing is meant to be toured on your own, the other wing is accessible only to the guided tours. We did the self-guided portion first and then took the guided tour. In total, we were here for about 2 hours. We visited in December and lines were really short. We got in line about 5 minutes before the front door opened and there were only 5-6 people in line in front of us. If you're coming at a more peak travel time you might want to plan to be in line earlier. The gardens weren't much to look at when we were here, but I've heard that they are worth a stroll if you are visiting in the spring or summer. The palace is very beautiful and boasts the largest ceiling fresco in the world...which also survived the bombing in WWII. I would definitely recommend making time for a visit if you are in Würzburg.
