There are several different rooms of artifacts , most of which are clearly marked. I especially enjoyed the room of Pioneer artifacts.
Drove to see the Riverfront Murals and walked to view them. Little did we know that the Old Depot Museum was closing. We did walk around it and across the railroad tracks and saw the historical area. Next time, we'll be sure we see the museum first and then gaze at the murals.
Large selection of documents, firearms, clothing, uniforms, bicycles, China, crystal, etc. You are assured to find several interesting things. You can also appreciate the beautiful stairs, doors and windows in that stately, dignified, gorgeous old structure.
The old courthouse pre-dates the Civil War. It was a target for Union gunners. The museum contains a Confederate flag that was never surrendered, the tie Jeff Davis wore when he was sworn in as the Confederate President in Montgomery, Al. There are also interesting pieces of art, furniture and a Teddy Bear given to a Vicksburg child by President Teddy Roosevelt when he spoke at the courthouse.
I had promised to bring an authentic Civil War bullet back for a friend, and one of the staff at Vicksburg National Park told me I would find them at the gift shop in the Old Court House Museum. I found the bullet, but we also found much more in this very interesting museum. They have a huge collection of Civil War memorabilia and a particularly interesting room about Jefferson Davis and his wife. Jefferson was a local though he did not return after the Civil War. They also had a very well preserved Court Room from the mid- 1800's that my husband, a retired lawyer, found particularly interesting. This museum delivered much more than I was expecting and I would highly recommend you spend an hour or two here.
Very nice museum dedicated to the town and the Vicksburg battle. Two full floors with Stair chair for up stairs access for handicap. Contains many unusual artifacts, that other museum do not have.
Its even better when local historian Gordon Cotton is there when he can tell you any and everything you ever wanted to know about the area, the Civil War and Vicksburg in particular! Well worth the experience. The old courthouse is really cool to view as well.
Maybe I put the review for this on the Cairo. Whatever, go to it. It filled in all the blanks about life during this time period, Civil War, in Vicksburg. We truly enjoyed it.
While not huge, this museum is well worth a visit. We enjoyed seeing the beautiful models of the ships that it exhibits. Of course the museum concentrates on the Civil War. They offer a movie explaining the war. It's an old movie, and is virtually the same facts that the new movie shows at the Vicksburg Military Park, but it's not what we went there to see anyway. The gentleman working at the museum is very friendly and willing to answer any questions you have. If you see the ad mentioning the approx. 100 old cars, don't expect real cars like we did. The cars are all small cars held in a case. But it was fun to see them anyway. Parking is free and right across the parking lot of the museum. The museum covers two floors and we were there about 90 minutes.
If you are in Vicksburg I would recommend you take time and visit the old courthouse. There are a lot of history here. The court house holds a lot of old artifacts from the civil war era
