Sun Bay is a perfect place to spend the day. The bay is larger than most on the island and offers many options for parking yourself amongst the palm trees. You can be secluded or next to others, its really your choice on most days. We enjoyed swimming in the water as there are no waves, but when its windy there is a slight pull in the water, so choose your swimming path wisely. Also, if you have small children there is a small break, literally about a foot of sand, where the water pushes against the beach. You have to be just on the other side of it, so most parents were holding their children while swimming. The beach is long and a great place for walking in the morning or evening. We saw many locals walking up on the road that is dirt and runs the whole beach. I opted to walk on the sand and enjoyed looking at all the small shells and coral that washes up in certain areas. We brought along lunch and an ice chest, but there appeared to be a place to get drinks at the entrance. Fee is $2 per car. Great beach!
We went later in the day and there was almost no one around. It was like having a private beach to ourselves. Theres beautiful wild horses that graze in the field by the beach. We saw 3 new foals with their mothers.
Friends of ours who've been to Vieques many times suggested that we should meet them at Sun Beach. We may not have gone, had they not asked us to meet them there, as we're not big on manicured, 'developed' beaches with bathrooms, outdoor showers, bar-b-ques, et al. Oh my, were we wrong. Yes, it's got the tourist facilities, but it is also so big, that one can find a spot without anyone else nearby. The sand is pure and white, and there is some shade from coconut palms and large sea grape bushes. It's a lovely tropical beach with easy parking (entrance is $ 2) and one does NOT have to leave windows open & your car unlocked, as you have to do at all the other, more remote island beaches. Sun Bay beach is really lovely. Go!
What a great spot! Not far from Esperanza and it's the first beach in a long string (including Bio Bay) down some pretty rough dirt roads. What's great about Sun Bay is if you don't have a four-wheeler you can park right at the public concession stand area, go have a coconut rum drink (the coconut is custom-cut for you by the server at the lunch place), order some wonderful burritos, carnitas, fried fish or whatever they are cooking that day, and then just go chill on the beach. We recommend, however, that you drive just a little way down the dirt road and go to the far end of Sun Bay. The water is calmer there and you can sit under the coconut trees and just watch the world go by. Fabulous spot.
Large beautiful bay that you can walk around from Esperanza. Tidepools galore and the wild horses seem to love the place. Was too windy for us to snorkel while we were there, but enjoyed walking the shoreline.
There are many secluded beaches in Vieques that are worth exploring, which we did, but we kept finding ourselves heading back to Sun Bay where there are palm trees for shade if wanted and even on a busy weekend day in February one can find a spot with solitude. An idyllic Caribbean beach experience.
Huge beach, clear water, not crowded, amazing views, clean sand, pretty close to a town, easy access.
I have never tasted coconut like the one I had while visiting this beach. Not only was it a lovely drink, but I took back the coconut when I'd drunk it all, and the man cut the coconut meat up for me. AMAZING. Along with the easy shade of the palm trees and the warm sandy swim in the ocean... this was the perfect beach trip I could have had:)
Sun Bay is really big and very scenic. It is great for swimming and enjoying views over the Caribbean at the end of the day. The sand is wide and ranges in texture. Lots of spots with shade. It is nice that you can visit the big Sun Bay beach and then for variety travel to smaller Media Luna and Navio Beaches all for the same small admission charge.
a short walk out of Esperenza and you can walk right along the beach to get to it. Plenty of room so it never felt busy. Awesome setting, shade under the bigger palms and at one end toiled facilites and a super great little cafe / snack bar with the most wonderful host
