Very sad, conditions of some of the animals were very poor, especially the monkeys. The Bear enclosure was the last straw and had me walking right to the exit. So sorry that I gave these people my money!
On our way to the "grand canyon" we a family of 16, decided to stop and see the Zoo.. The animals were tromping around in watery feces, a bear is in a yard fence only and just laying there. The bear in the actual rusty falling apart cage was pacing and clawing our corn we threw into the cage to eat. The Monkeys thighs and butts are beat red and raw with huge yellow green sores on each hind cheek. Heart breaking really as they looked at me with human eyes and I cried. I told them I am so sorry they are being treated like this and im going to ask for help for them. Tiger - ok they had one in this chain link fence enclosure.. OMG!! There is a reason why real zoo's have moats around the lions and tigers and bears.. That is not safe.. And the tiger just laid there and didn't move.. The tourist store was filled with cute cats that roam free , however the ammonia smell of cat urine was nauseating.. What got me was they are down the road from state forest and state land with DEC. How can they ignore the way these animals are being treated is beyond me.. Phone calls have been made.. Horrific for our young children to see such things. FYI our age group was 3 months up to 60's.
If those three things are something you're interested, then feel free to stop. Otherwise: KEEP DRIVING. We were on our way to the PA Grand Canyon and saw these "rustic" signs. As a biologist, I am always excited for any zoo: large or small. Before we crossed the road, we could smell urine. At first, my husband said "Oh, it's just zoo smell". Upon entering the "gift shop" the smell was so intense I started to gag. We did not make it more than ten paces into the gift shop without retreating back to fresh air. I cannot attest to the condition of the zoo, or the rest of the gift shop because we figured, if the entrance was this bad, it could only get worse. For some ungodly reason, we still opted to get food at the snack bar. We were surrounded by buzzing flies, a colony of domestic cats, and the cat urine smell. All of which were obviously an appetite stimulant. (Insert extreme sarcasm here). The service was awful. No hellos, no smiles, no have a nice days. No eye contact for that matter. Just took our money and gave us our acceptable food. The fries were okay, the chicken was gross, and the ice cream was freezer burnt. We opted to eat in our car, away from the smell, away from the cats, away from the flies. Save your time. Save your money. Do NOT go to this "zoo". It is awful.
It was horrible gift shop was so so dirty and all you could smell was cat pee! The poor animals not well taken care of at all. This dump should be shut down!
On a recent trip through Wellsboro, I took guests to visit Harrison Point and stopped at Animal Land on the way back. I had not visited Animal Land in perhaps 6 plus years. Time has not been kind to this zoo. Appears that owners have no sense of care for animals or environment; which ultimately impacts their business. Based on recent reviews; as well as my own experience... This place will not survive into the future... As written by others; the cat urine smell in the gift store in so overwhelming our group felt sick; and even avoided using the bathroom; due to cat urine smell. We never even considered eating at this location for fear of food poisioning. We did take a tour of the zoo; and like others stated, was very sad. The state of the pens was poor; and some animals appeared to be malnurished for sure... I would not recommend wasting your money.... at least until a "major" change is made!
Keeo driving by. The canyon is the best attraction. I feel bad for the animals, they deserve better. Smelly, dirty, rude staff, and the feeling of needing a shower if you visit this place!
Visited on July 15, 2014. I echo many of the other reviews. Cats everywhere along with an extremely strong cat pee smell-especially in the 'gift shop'. The owner was nice but the place is poorly kept. The animals and facility need help. I thought several of the cages were too cramped (bears, tiger, fox, kangaroo to name a few). It was disappointing and I left feeling rather sad for all those animals. Even my 4 year old wondered why the bear cage was so small.I would not recommend going here. Instead, save your money and do something else...anything else.
We brought our 8 year old son here. He LOVED IT, because you can feed the horses, goats, rams and deer. They have two black bear and a Siberian Tiger. Also, 4 monkeys. Neat place, but we do question the health of some of the animals. Pens could have been cleaner and the facility is not kept up well. The gift shop smells HORRID. I MEAN HORRID. Get your tickets for the animalland and GET OUT OF THE GIFT SHOP! Kids will love the animals!
Was not impressed with this zoo. Was not maintained very well, areas in the zoo were run down and in bad shape and some animals looked unkept and not healthy to say the least. Reminded me of something out of a Stephen King novel.
This is a neat little zoo for people of all ages to visit. Be sure to buy a bag of food to feed to the animals. Many of them will come right up to you and eat from your hand. I especially liked the deer and the goats. It was funny watching the geese follow us down almost the entire trail when they realized we had food. Overall, it's reasonably priced and worth checking out. There are a lot of people complaining about the smell of cat urine. This is definitely an issue inside the gift shop. It is very strong and makes the gift shop unpleasant to browse around in. Although I enjoyed interacting with the animals I did not browse the gift shop because the smell was intolerable. I really hope the owners get a professional cleaner in there and take care of that because it's not healthy for anyone to be breathing that in.
