We tried this because my niece asked my husband and I to go. We are now on a Groupon for 10 visits. It is fun, entertaining, and a good workout. There are several things you can do. There are the walls with the harness where you hook yourself to the line so when you climb to the top you can just let go and glide down. We are not serious climbers so we don't follow the color coded routes to make it to the top. We just have fun climbing. There is also another thing called "Bouldering". That is quite a bit harder in my opinion. In that room you climb the color coded routes and there are mats to land on if you fall. It is also fun to watch some of the other climbers doing the really hard routes. We have seen people of all ages in the rock gym. Everyone from young kids to middle age. They have daily or monthly rates so even if you just wanted to try it once. For the daily fee you would have to pay a bit extra to rent the shoes and harness, but it is not much. They also offer climbing lessons for kids and adults as well as birthday parties.

I was looking for something to do with my 6 year old grandson. I found information on the Boston Rock Gym and was excited to learn that they have a kids program weekday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 and Saturdays from 12:30-2:30. The fee is reasonable at $25, which includes climbing shoe rental, harness rental and assistance from some great instructors. They limit the number of kids per session so you don't have to wait too long between climbs and there is an option to use the auto belay if you like. The session we went to had 3 or 4 staff to 12 kids.You get warm after a bit of climbing, so you may want to wear a short sleeved shirt or bring one with you. Socks are a must. A mid-session snack (no food in the climbing area) would be a good idea too.There are numerous wall-climbing options with a variety of difficulty levels. The place is very clean. Again, the climbing staff was great - Safety was stressed and they went over the rules on a level the kids could understand and remember. They were very encouraging, yet didn't push the kids too far out of their comfort zone as to not scare them or turn them off to future climbing. Since I live out of town, I'm hoping my grandson will go again with his mom & dad.
