We called in hearing and reading both the positive and the negative reviews. The dairy and tasting rooms are a few hundred metres from the main road. Both the tasting room and cafe are elevated but have an easy access ramp making it one of the few wheelchair accessible venues in the area. The cafe has a lovely aspect over the fields and to the channel.Being elevated and no playing areas it isn't quite child friendly, so if you've got children and plan to have some cheese and wine on the deck then pack some entertainment for them. The cheeses on offer where disappointing given the number of awards hanging on the walls. All lacked depth in flavour, in particular the so called Roquefort copy (sapphire blue) wasn't anywhere near the real thing. I didn't expect it to be the same and found it was too firm and lacked the moisture and tang from a genuine mould cheese. The Blondie was smooth and had a delicate crust but needed the Pinot paste to give it some flavour. The Primavera is OK but the vine leaf camembert was less than average.I am astounded that they have won so many awards. Recently we've tasted sheep cheese which surpasses these, one being recently at the Port Macquarie garden markets.Forget the whey liqueur and the wine, they're terrible.Usually cellar door sales are cheaper than the retail outlets, but sadly not in this case. We saw the same cheeses at near by outlets for a few dollars cheaper each.Even though I don't rate these cheeses, it's always a matter of individual taste so still visit and at least enjoy the view and experience.
Lovely views from the café. A good introduction to sheep's milk cheese and lots of variety to taste. We had some lunch after the tasting in the café. We were surprised that the lady taking us through the tastings had a hairstyle that needed regularly flicking back with her hand - not the best look for a food venue.
Worth a stop for the 3pm sheep milking (seasonal, I think) - kids really enjoyed this. Especially good on a rainy day! Staff were very knowledgeable and answered lots of questions. Good range of fairly pricy sheep cheeses and wouldn't recommend a stop just for lunch as menu was fairly limited.
Judy from Eyesee Personalised Tours escorted us to the cheesery prior to our visit to the Huon Valley. We enjoyed the tastings offered to us and (without pressure) purchased some delicious products to take away. I particularly loved the pinot paste, one of the nicest pastes to accompany cheese that I have tasted! Very rich flavour. We enjoyed checking out the sheep and superb views over the farming countryside. Great local attraction.
Where to start? We stumbled on this place when we decided to take a drive from Hobart to Huon Valley area return. First of all beautiful drive and highly recommended for an afternoon of seaside towns etc!We were greeted warmly by the two puppies belonging to the owner of Grandvewe. A lovely old choc lab and a young Hungarian Vizsla! I fell in love with both (may be missing our pooch a tiny bit). Thereafter we are also warmly greeted by the owner - a young vibrant lady who was welcoming even though I threatened to steal her dogs... Lovely cheese tasting - the cost? Just 5 minutes of our time! What a lovely response to hear! We decided to stay for lunch enjoying a lovely cheese platter and a glass of wine with an a amazing view. Needless to say the cheese was fabulous and we purchased a few things. This place is a great lunch choice ... The view on their deck is lovely and its very relaxing. You can also say hi to the sheep and they have sheep milking each day at I think 3pm for a small fee ($5 maybe? We didn't stay for it as we were there much too early). Also great just to call in and try the cheese! They have quite a few and all were all lovely!
Just called in for a tasting and they so exactly what it says on the label. Great cheese. The staff were knowledgable about their product
Great cheese and well matched house wines. Nice simple food with a spectacular view that is well worth the drive from Hobart!
The cheeses on offer were all very nice - we grabbed the White Pearl and also their Pinot Paste, both delicious. We also tasted their wines (a bit on the pricey side for their quality though). We decided to stay for lunch on the huge verandah - pleasant enough for a quick snack with very informal service.
We drove back to Hobart from Port Huon via Birch's Bay just to visit Grandvewe. The staff are warm and friendly, and we were offered a free tasting as soon as we walked in. Their cheeses are unique and very good. However, I found them much too pricey for something purchased at the source. They have a special Vanilla Whey Liquer but that was very pricey as well. My favourite product of the 6 items we purchased is the White Pearl Cheese. We had planned to have lunch at Fluerty's nearby but did not realise that they are closed on Tuesday. Therefore we ended up having a late lunch/snack at Grandvewe. Their service is very informal but friendly, however, the menu is very limited.
Grandvewe has a first floor shop/servery and gorgeous terrace. We stopped to enjoy a lunchtime glass of wine and a tasting platter of four excellent cheeses produced on site, sheep in the fields right in front. The location and view are wonderful,
