This is all about the view. Climbed some stairs to spectacular view, even in drizzly weather. There are some informative signs along the way so you get to learn about this important historical site, but the view is what it's all about.
we hiked up the ramp on the back side to get to the top and enjoyed the views as well as the historical information on the placards. There is no actual building but there is a lot of history about the Russian history in Sitka and the transfer to the US
A small little site, in the heart of town. There is a great view of the town, harbor and surrounding area from the top of a small hill. A few historical markers, and that is it.
Love the view from up here. Work the little hike up the back or stairs up the front. Don't miss it. The history of Sitka is displayed up here, if you can go over ALaska Days do it
Decided on a sunny day to explore the Baranof Castle. There's two different entry ways: one is walking ramp and an option to walk a steeper gravel walkway Or steps from Lincoln street. The view was amazing, good information but no castle. It's a good 10-20 minute adventure.
We didn't realize that there would be no remnant of a castle whatsoever, so we were a little disappointed. Nonetheless, it was very interesting and a must see while in Sitka. It is where Alaska was transferred to the US. The redeeming factor is that it has an absolute gorgeous view of the surrounding area! You can definitely see why there used to be a castle there.
Having read Mitcheners Alaska this particular site was a must see and I was surprised the hill was so small. Pleased to see there is no particular building on it now as all the previous buildings were important for their own reasons.
Not much, just few steps on a hill with avarage viewbut full in history, good they left some edu-plates.That was a beginning of white man settlement on Alaska shore
Was surprised that there were no buildings at the top of the hill. However,, there is a great view of the harbor. Plaques along the trail list some of the history.
