There's just something about this place that I love. Maybe it's the history behind it. Maybe it's the cats! Yeah. It's the cats! Cute little gift shop too. Fun just to walk around and look at the gardens and the cat cemetery.
It was crowded but definitely worth the visit if only to see the six toed cats and get a sense of the history of Key West. Discounted tickets are available at tourist kiosks around town.
Wonderful historic home. Very knowledgable guides. Be sure to walk all around the grounds after the tour. There are so many interesting areas to look at.
We took a guided tour of this historic, and architecturally significant, House. We are glad we did, otherwise we would have missed a lot of cute little details without the explanations in that tour. We loved the story about the "Penny" showcased in the cement near the swimming pool, and could not help but smile, along with all the other people there. The home is completely adorned with very beautiful period pieces, and feels peaceful, in spite of all the tourists milling around. All the volunteers here are pleasant and knowledgeable about the history of the house, about Hemingway's exploits, and about the significance of the property right in front of the Lighthouse, ( the Lighthouse that apparently helped bring Hemingway home after a night of drinking ). Kudos to the guides who show-off the place as if it is their own.The Swimming Pool is HUGE for that time period. It is surrounded by many decorative items. The Garden is filled with exotic plants from around the world. Most importantly, there are many, many six-toed cats. They are an integral part of the history of the house, and are the so-called Descendants of Hemingway's cats. They roam the property freely. They all have names, and even sit regally on the furniture that no one else is allowed to touch. It felt surreal to walk in the path, and stand in the spots, that Hemingway walked and stood.A "Must Visit" place if you are a Hemingway fan.You will not be disappointed.
At Hemingway House, we had a fabulous tour guide who told us many stories of Hemingway, and his life with his four wives, and his writing. The house is gorgeous with many antiques, and the grounds are beautifully manicured.
Thank you for your review. We do get a few comments about air conditioning in the summer months, but being a National Historic Landmark and falling under the local Historic Architectual Review Commitee we are not allow to carve out A/C duct and vent openings through the floors or walls of the 160 year old mansion. I personally have some appreciation for "feeling" it the way Hemingway felt it when he lived here (with no air conditioning). Glad to see you enjoyed Irish Kevin's, their catering division provides food and beverage for our weddings and special events that we host here at the Hemingway Home. Hope you had a safe return to PA, I visit Boalsburg occasionally where my fiancee's home is. Love that state too.

Thanks for your great review! Glad to see Floridians enjoying the great cities of their home state of Florida. I see you also went to Blue Heaven, I don't know if you were told this but when Pauline Hemingway removed Ernest's boxing ring to install the pool she had the boxing ring re-located to the site of what is now Blue Heaven. So, we have a connection in addition to one of their former employees that works here. Might have been your tour guide. Thanks again.
